This might sound stupid but I wanted to know how I could free up system resources. I currently have 80% free which is pretty good I guess. I'm just curious to see if I can free up any more.

Close one at a time and check resources between each one to see how your resources are increasing. But remember, do not close "explorer" or "systray". Good Luck, Paul Yoda 09-03-1999, 01:30 AM In addition to what jmatrix said To free up resources think of the following: Don't use a wallpaper, if you need one then use a small sized bmp-file and tile it to fill up the screen. Use as little non-systemfonts as possible. Every installed font is loaded at startup. jeffgordon24 09-03-1999, 02:02 PM 80% isn't to bad. Just hope it doesn't get to 70% cause that's when your prone to a crash Glytzhkof 09-03-1999, 04:32 PM jeffgordon24: you're prone to chrash when your resources are at 70 percent? I usually run my system really hard. I'm often as low as 30% on free resources and I usually don't even reboot in one session (10-14 hours). Joel Kleppinger 09-03-1999, 05:04 PM I wish I were as fortunate. When doing serious work, I often struggle with less than 10% free. I wish I knew of a way to increase the resource space or even make it limitless as NT does, but I don't. I'm not sure if the latest version of QEMM (version 8?) does this, but I may give it a try. When doing serious work, here's what I may have open at any particular time: winamp, ICQ, AOL IM, Eudora, SB Liveware, Norton AV and Crashguard, RC5, 7-10 Navigator windows, Frontpage 98 (don't like it, but I'm efficient with it), Photoshop 5, and maybe Word or Excel. After using all of this at one time for a little while, my resources quickly drop below 5%, FP crashes by 2%, and I have to start closing out stuff to keep from crashing. It's pretty annoying. If anyone has any ideas on how to increase the GDI and user resource space, I'd appreciate it. And no, NT isn't an option right now. :-/ IRED 09-03-1999, 06:30 PM Goto start-Run-type msconfig-go to startup tab-uncheck everything except systray scanreg & power profile. Go to Config.sys & Autoexec.bat & uncheck everything there. ReBoot. Check your resources,Mine read %93 free after boot. My computer has been on for 3 days without a reboot an I have been on the net for 2.5 hours while running Outlook Express + 2 other programs an my resourses at %82 free. One of the programs I'm useing is Word 97. Bob-NB 09-03-1999, 07:14 PM Like most I hate it when programs refuse to release their RAM when they are closed down. I picked up a neat free program recommended and used by DoctorDoom at another site called RamBooster. I don't know exactly how it works, but I set its' alarm for about 25% resources. At that time, it activates and releases system ram. It works great. Its available for free download at: www.saunalahti.fi/~borg/rambooster/ (http://www.saunalahti.fi/~borg/rambooster/) socalgal 09-03-1999, 07:27 PM Now, I am sure there is a way to set your system resources to the percentage you want - I remember this from Win95, so ... but I just can't remember where... darn, where's that gingko? johnpaul 09-05-1999, 05:02 PM Raven - Here's a freeware program called Startup Cop. It allows you to customize what gets loaded in the systray. The less loaded, the quicker your startup. http://www.zdnet.com/pcmag/pctech/content/18/08/ut1808.001.html JP Joel Kleppinger 09-05-1999, 05:53 PM Well, RamBooster doesn't free GDI/user resources - just RAM. So my search continues.... Livewire 09-10-1999, 06:55 PM O.K., I start with about 95% sometimes as much as 97% and crashes seem to be just a part of the daily grind. I thought it was a viral thing so last weekend I wiped the HD and bought a smaller one for OS and Anti-virus ware only.Again, today it's blue screening. I do alot of Audio work. So I have been trying to get the sound card (SB 16 with AWE 32 PnP) just so. I worked out all the conflicts this morning had every thing rockin and the indignant little *&%(* starts spitting hex at me. I was on my way out so I only caught a few (0Eh, 92B0) were the last things I saw as I pried my hands from the keyboard. Looks like another all-nighter. Unless!?!? Anyone has any clues? LIvewire [This message has been edited by Livewire (edited 09-10-99).] Virus 09-10-1999, 09:05 PM Win95 2.x holds up a lot better then Win98 to resource punishers (ppl who need 10 apps at once). I found that out after we sold a client a new PII400 system to replace his Dell P120. He had a list of software that he needed to run. On his old Dell with Win95. It would get down to 30-35% resources. The same software on the PII400 with Win98. It would get down to 10-15%! A lot of times it wouldn't every last long enough to run everything. I had this system lean and tweaked. On a fresh boot, it would have 97% resources free. After seeing that. Installing Win98 on my own systems never crosses my mind. Livewire 09-11-1999, 01:04 AM Now where did my copy of 95 go? oh &^$^&*%$!! SysOpt.com
