Just a quick question here, I a putting together an Athlon XP 2500 system on an Asus a7n8x-x mobo with 512mb of crucial DDR 266 ram. The question is what should I clock the RAM at?? On auto setting it's at 133mhz, is this right or should it be at the same speed as the FSB?
TIA:t

Which AMD CPU are you using? A Thoroughbred requires DDR266 minimum. A Barton requires DDR333. That's with no overclocking.
If you have a 133MHz AMD, oveclocking is going to be hard.

That RAM runs stock at 133. Your processor runs stock at 166. You should get faster RAM. PC2700 if you do not want to OC or PC3200 (or higher) if you want to OC.
Good luck! :D
EDIT: Right, if you have the Barton core... If not, your fine, everything runs at 133. :D

Yup - PC3200/DDR400 is recommended for a Barton 2500+.
Indeed, but to answer his question, 133mhz is the right speed for DDR266 :)

but may be represented in the bios settings by 4/5 depending on your board.
PC3200 is cheap at the moment and would support overclocking of that chip.

True, but that wasn't the question :p As has been mentioned a couple of times now, the Barton runs at 166MHz FSB.

It's a Barton core. I didn't realize it should have the somewhat faster RAM though. Well, I'll leave it for my son to upgrade. It runs well I was just curious if I had it set right.
It won't be OC'd, so I may tell him if he wants more from it, to upgrade to 2700 ram.
Thanks for the help here.:t

If you are going to change the RAM, I would suggest you get PC3200 RAM instead of PC2700. There's not much difference between these two types of RAM in terms of prices. Plus you can keep the RAM without it getting obsolete that fast, as compared to if you had gotten PC2700 RAM.
Hope it helps. :)
