I just bought a Maxtor 6.8GB drive a little while ago, but when I formatted it, it's only registering as a 6.3GB drive. Please help. wrench 02-15-1999, 12:26 AM drive manuf. call a gb 1000mb software uses the correct figure of 1048mb for a gb. my 8.4 is really only 7.8 gb. Eli 02-15-1999, 07:41 PM Wrench is right. My 4.3 is really only a 3.99. budzagreen 02-21-1999, 11:29 PM My speakers are 400w, but they sound like shyt at 5! Gwydion 03-03-1999, 06:49 PM I have disagree look at the size of your drive in DOS and in BIOS. I have a 4.3 that Windows only read as 3.99. I installed old school DOS and made 3 partitions, then installed Windows, I then installed installed Partition Magic and optimized my partions, recovering the 300 Meg Windows forgot about. -- TheCop 03-03-1999, 09:51 PM A GB is not 1048 MBs it's 1024 MBs Not that this helps you any, but wrench is correct on the drive manufacturers saying it's a GB is 1000 MBs. I wonder if they have ever been sued for false advertising. Yupee 03-05-1999, 10:19 PM I diagree... Even you can see that you put the counting backwords: if the manuf. said (ex) 8,4G and they reffer to 1G=1000K, so, for the software it will be 8,4x24K=202K more, that is 8,6G (!!!!!!) Isn't that funny? The REAL thing is that the manuf give capacity after LOW LEVEL FORMAT. What we do after that with FORMAT is called HIGH LEVEL FORMAT, using part of disk for information about the data stored. So what you see after FORMAT is FREE disk space and is less than the capacity of HD. How much less, depends on how well the clusters are managed (size, number). This can be discussed even further... SysOpt.com
