My so-called server, an old MMX 166, has started coming up with error messages at boot saying "... files have been replaced by older versions following a recent installation of an application " or words to that effect. Mostly .DLL s.
I did install something last week and I have tried to re-install '98 from the files on my second HD (straight copy CD into the d:\win98 folder.)
I can't remember too much about 98 but was there a repair facility? How do I get these files back?
It still runs OK but it's a bit tedious having to stay whilst these 4 or 5 screen messages come up.
There are three computers on the small network here, My XP Pro PC, the MMX 166 and my laptop when needed.

I recall, on Win98SE, something like, if you perform an install over the existing OS, it'll ask you if you want to "save the existing something, which will take an extra 110MB"...I did it once and it worked like a reinstall, without losing any user settings...but I already try to do it again, and it screwed up :p Be cautious on doing it, if you choose to.

Could you please give us the DLL names? I hate guessing games.

How did I know you'd say that?
Yer 'tis.
First and third messages read:
'The following system files have been replaced with older versions by a program you recently ran.
These files are currently in use and cannot be automatically repaired. Windows may not run correctly until you exit and restart windows so that these files can be automatically restored. '
File name is c:\windows\system\DDEML.DLL
second and fourth messages read as first & third as far as '...recently ran.'
Then...
'Please restore these files from the windows setup located on the original disks to verify your current application.'
File names are c:\windows\system\ mcicdia.drv &
\winaspi.dll.
Owzat Sir William?

Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Windows Setup and uninstall all Multimedia. Reboot and then reinstall.
Winaspi.dll here:
http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?winaspi
Re-apply DirectX afterward.
