I just installed Windows 98 and am using a Logitech "First Mouse" Serial Mouse. Most times when I single-click it registers as a double-click. Menus and objects are opening and closing when we click on them as it's reading everything as a double-click. This is definitely a timing problem, not a mechanical problem - worked fine a slower Win95 machine. Is there any way I can slow down the polling of the mouse. Slowing down the mouse motion speed does not help. Windows 98 in general acts like its on speed! Any ideas appreciated.
in the control panel (start button, settings, control panel), open the mouse icon (double-click http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif, and adjust the double click speed (forgot which panel, just look through all the settings).

You may also want to check under My Computer--View--Folder Options. With Win98 comes IE4 which has all these web-like settings for the rest of the system. I may be wrong, but I think there is a setting in there for single clicking icons to open them rather than double clicking.
The double click speed should never do what yours is doing, regardless of how fast you set it. If you are using a serial mouse, they always seem to look faster to me for some reason. Their refresh rate is slow, as compared to a USB mouse, but that shouldn't make it speed across your desktop. Wish I could be of more help to you.
Good luck.
