Wondering what the "ATX12V1" square (with 4 pins) is needed for used for?

Do I need to use this on my motherboard using a Athon 2500+ with a mobo/power supply that supports it or is this for Pentium4 cpus etc?

That is a requirement of P4 motherboards, not Athlons. just leave it.

A lot of athlon boards now have a connector for the 4pin plug. If yours is one of them, then use it. If your board doesn't have it, then leave it be.

Last year after reading and posting several questions I went with a EPOX 8RDA+ mother board and Crutial memory. System has been problem free for almost a year now. I am currently looking into upgrading a computer at work and using an EPOX for it.
I have learned alot from these post, so keep posting.

Have a great day!

Not true anymore, I recently had a customer who said her computer was not responding after powering on, it was not loading Windows. I remember specifically how I built the computer. Nowadays if the board has it on it, USE IT!
Anyways I went to her after trying over the phone troubleshooting, and found the 12V ATX line unplugged...Plugged it in and the sysetm came back to life...

If my casing doesn't have that, can I use a P4 motherboard on it?

Well...just change the Power supply and you should be fine...

So If I'm going to get a P4, I must upgrade the PSU? So that means the ATX12V1 is mandatory?

For a P4 yes...definately...AMD's it depends on the board but if the board has it you need it too then...

methinks there are adapters available to convert the ordinary molex into ATX12v1. It's no big sweat.

It's primarily there to take load off the atx connector and reduce the lengths of power traces on the mobo.
