HI all...just want to ask that Im thinking about making a switch for the router power so I can turn it off at night. Is this a good idea? I just think it might extend the life of the router like that. Is this ok??? Have anyone done this? Thanks favorite peepz:t

I do not see that making a switch would benefit anything. You could always plug in the router to as regular power strip/surge supressor and use that. My UPS is plugged into the wall and my monitor switch is messed up so I use a surge suppresor to switch it on and off. UPS --> Surge Supressor --> Monitor

Only My Tower and Monitor and Router are plugged into the UPS. My other devices and not protect by the UPS as they are off unless I am using them and my UPS gets off balance if I plug many more devices into it. It is a small UPS. About 20 Minutes supply if power fails. That is enough time for me or the software to powwer off the computer.

I leave my netwrok device on all the time. They run fine. I guess it is a matter of preference. Our routers and switches at work are on 24/7 and have never failed in three years.

Electrical devices work better if they are kept on 24/7

Its the switching on and off and the surge of electricity everytime that damages/wears out more electrical items than any other!

I have the feeling that is one of the Myths that never was proven one way or the other.

I remember the heated argument concerning this subject more than 10 years ago.

Since I have few installations some that are running 24/7 and others that are switched off every day, I kind of keeping an eye on this issue.

During the years almost all of the Hardware was replaced since it became outmoded, while it is still in working condition. I could not detect any differences between systems that were kept On for years and the others.

Back to the Router. Most of the Entry Level Network Devices are poorly made. I would suggest leaving it on for few days, and occasionally touching it; if it feels very Warm I would switch Off when done for the day. In addition some of these Gizmos tend to collect “Garbage” in their memory during operation, resultant in slow down. Daily booting (during the On and Off act) solves this issue.

BTW. In a place like NYC an elaborate System that is kept On all the time is also a matter of $$$. Even if it comes to occasional replacement of an item it is still cheaper than the cost of Electricity. The difference of keeping a 4 Computers Network with Router, printers, scanner, etc. On all the time or Switching it Off during the Night can amount to $40 a month.

Yeah but hes only talking about a router not an entire network!

Why not just buy a timerswitch from Maplin/Tandy - they usually have an on off switch built in to plus you can have it reliably switch on and off at certain times! Beware buying the cheap ones though if youare running a heavy load!

I have to disagree - when you are using items such as relays they do burn out a lot quicker when switching on and off regularly! I used to work for JVC in a tv factory and all the electronic design engineers swore by the leave it on 24/7 rule oh and the dust it out every 6 months rule - electrical failure is caused on many occasoins by the acid from dust penetrating the substrate layer of motherboards!
