i got a mother board, but it didnt come with any ram, it takes a 168 pin DIMM SDRAM....i heard that some boards will only accept 128mb cards....how do ya know? i dont know what brand or model mother board i have, so is there anyway of knowing how much it can handle?

Sorry, my crystal ball is having its bulb replaced.
How on earth should we know without you giving us ANY information on what you have there? Try a little harder please.

The name has to be silkscreened on it somewhere, perhaps even a model name....can you post a photo of it?

Get Aida32:
http://www.aida32.hu/download/aida32pe_385.exe
Download that and install it. It will tell you everything about your hardware.

Put some RAM in it first.

at least tell us what processor the board runs. that will at least narrow it down.

What you've heard has to do with the density and thus maximum capacity of the DIMM. Therefore the question of 'how one knows' comes back to WHICH board is it? They're all different. That one uses SDRAM, but at this point we dont' know if it's low or high density.
What you need to do is examine every square inch of the motherboard to find things like brand, possibly model, and other components like the chipset (maybe it's an Intel 440BX? VIA KT133?), Socket type (is it socket 462, socket 478, socket 370, slot 1, slot A, etc? Any tidbit (or meal)of info will greatly help us help you.
