Toshiba sd-m1102...Will not play dvd,s

I have a old school toshiba m1102. It worked fine untill i took it out of one machine and put it on another machine with xp. I was told i needed firmware. So i went through the firmware update... Now what! Im about ready to give up now. It just dont want to read dvds. it will read cds! <edit> somebody please help.

Make sure that the drive is jumpered properly and that you didn't bend or crush any pins.

i already used that firmware. I just cant figure out why it didn't update... It will play cds fine..... i just want it to play dvds. Ive tryed 2 different types of firmware too. but i thought when you use firmware it just opens up regions. Ahhhhhh like i said im about to give up now.
