I am in the process of rebuilding a computer and am having problems with bootup. The PC is a 486 66 DX2. I had taken the modem, hard drive out and placed in a new Pentium barebones system, no problems there. I am replacing the hard drive and modem in the 486 which was working fine before the installation. When I tried booting up the 486 for the first time, I had no display. The computer beeped twice, then eight times in rapid succession. The drives cycled like it was booting up, then the computer beeped once. After looking for loose cables, boards, etc. I powered back up. The display came on, the computer did the memory check and BIOS load, and everything was fine. When I powered up the next day and was greeted with the same problem. I have been inside the case looking for loose wires and cables, nothing else has changed. I did pull the CMOS battery out and tested it. The battery is almost dead, about 1/2V. Could the weak battery be causing my problem? If not, what else could it be?

if your cmos battery is dying, you might be loosing all your bootup options ect. Replace the battery.
