If I build an xp 2500 barton which board would be best for a
36 g raptor sata drive? Want best hd performance for printing graphics (spooling is slow on current system -athlon 900).

With that CPU and HD...I think you'll have a big improvment no matter which board you choose.
that being said...
Abit NF7-S
Asus A7N8X -E Deluxe
MSI K7N2 Delta-ILSR
in that order. I prefer the Asus myself...but, a lot of people here are having problems with SATA and the asus board. Might be they sell more..not sure.
No problems on mine, with twin Raptors in RAID 0...but..that's just me.
would you jump to the athlon 64 3000 instead?
if so that would also change the boards?

it would absolutely change the boards, round peg, round hole...:p
Nope, I wouldn't....go 64 route.
Only way I would, is if money were absolutely no object.
Most of the time, it is the #1 object.
I personally, would give the 64 bit a little more time to mature. Sure...I know the AMD will run on 32 bit...but, why?
If you have to have the best gaming rig out...then maybe it's your cup of tea.
Personally, I'm going to wait till a version of windows with 64 bit is made...or, until my current system, less than a year old, takes a dump.
Not willing to jump on that bandwagon, just yet...
;)
is it really worth it to go with a raptor 36 or should I stick with an 8meg special edition wd drive?
edit:
space isn't a real issue since storage is mostly on the network

The Raptor is a lot faster. Whether you need that kind of speed or not is a question that you must ask yourself.
on storage review.com the wd 2000jb was rated 431 and the raptor at 483 or something on the officetest. so I wasn't sure if that difference was that great. The 72 raptor even rated higher but I don't want to spend that much. I am leaning toward speed since printing these graphics (time between spooling to the actual print) right now is a bear.
thanks

How much RAM do you have in the printer you are printing to, and the PC you're printing from?
Don't think the raptor will help with things like print spooling...but, Processor and RAM will.
