FAT32 to NTFS

I'm running NTFS now on my system but did so from a clean install...

my lady is running a WD 80G 7200RPM with XP Pro off FAT32 and I have it partitioned out into two drives...

can I select from 'hard drive manager' those drives....switch them to NTFS and not lose any data? probably not...but I figured I would ask....

I have Partition Magic8

can I do it with that

so far ... backup with XP pro and Norton/Symantec GoBack are unreliable and a half....

PM V8 and previous versions, can convert FAT32x to NTFS (and vice versa). I would not recommend NTFS, as it is a pain to recover from.

I would stay with FAT32x.

However, within PM V8 on the Desktop right-click on the volume to be converted>convert>select NTFS and follow the instructions.

If you have a power outage while the conversion process is in progress you will lose all the data on that volume or worse, so backup or take an image.

If you want to convert both volumes, do one at a time for precautionary reasons. PM will need to go in to pre-Windows to convert.

You can also use the same procedure using PM V8’s Rescue Diskettes.

If you are unsure about any of the above then post again prior to converting. Posting after a fail up will be of no help to you whatsoever. You will have to go in to the fascinating domain of data recovery.

Incidentally, GoBack is not a backup program.

goback is even worse than ntfs if you are trying a recovery.

I have never lost data in a conversion from FAT32 to NTFS. not to say that it can't happen. you can use the convert x: /fs:ntfs command line to also change the system to ntfs. That's how I always do it.

BTW, Drive Image 7 rocks for backups. you can do backups of windows FROM WINDOWS. sweet. :cool:
