Now that we have a definition, how about sharing some acronyms that you use on the BBS or the net? I figured out alot of them on my own when I got started, but I still don't know them all---and maybe some others don't either.

For example:

LMOA=Laughing my a** off
LOL=Laughing out loud or is it Lots of luck?

Don't worry, I know what all those acronyms stand for. I was just wondering if Comtech did. I really hate it when someone uses words or acronyms and doesn't know what they're saying. (although, I let everyone get away with SONAR, RADAR, and LASER just because they've been around for so long that they're actually defined as words in most dictionaries!)

If Comtech wants to list what those acronyms mean, they're welcome to do so!

nilknarf, I'm quite sure that you know what all those terms mean. You are right that many people use them without really knowing. I'm not sure that I actually knew that RADAR was an acronym.

I know that I did not know what many were when I started reading posts here, so I thought it would be fun to see one's that folks use.

RADAR = RAdio Detection And Ranging
LASER = Light Amplification by Stimulated Emissions of Radiation
SONAR = SOuNd detection And Ranging (I think)

Yea, I remember trying to figure out what some of the acronyms here mean. A few I didn't know until you started this thread.

Here's some more that you might see that relate to normally non-computer technologies.

MD = MiniDisc = Smaller version of an audio CD
DAT = Digital Audio Tape, in the pro audio world
Hi-Z = High Impedance
Lo-Z = Low Impedance
SLR = Single Lens Reflex
AGC = Automatic Gain Control
ADLC = Automatic Digital Level Control

I don't think it matters what the acronym stands for, but you do need to know what it means, because of the understanding when people talk about it. Most of the words, if not all, we use nowadays come from acronyms of the ancient latin and greek. I think it's important to know what they mean or what is pointed out by those words. When a non technical guy talks about his modem he knows that. If i say that it is a modulator v.v. i'm sure he'll freak out.

The nicest one is "JEEP". If i say that stands for "General Purpose", you'll say "No man! That's a vehicle," right.
But that's how it started out. The army needed a Gee Pee vehicle that over time shorted to "JEEP"
