These new bloody forceware things have brought nothing but trouble t me, so im trying to downgrade back to Cat 30.82 (the only set thats done what its supposed properly to for me in recent years). However evertime i do so windows (in its wisdom) upon reboot overwrites the 30.82 files with 52.16 versiosn that its obviously storing in a cache folder somwhere, only thing is, i cant find it to delete the **** thing.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

How do you go about deleting the Det drivers? I always go to Add/Remove Programs, and uninstall Nvidia Primary Display (or something like that. Then when my computer boots up, it sees my card as first a Standard VGA, then the sees it as a Geforce FX 5200 (using I think the older, Windows XP disc Dets.). Then from there I install the version I want.

Using that method but doing a clean boot and running NFR, then rebooting before installign the new driver. Only thing is, in this instance, when rebooting after the uninstall, the computer boots up as Standard VGA but then automatically detects itself as a Ti4200 with the 52.16 drivers

Think ive got it, in x:\windows\system32 there is a folder called 'ReinstallBackups' containing numbered directories, each of which holds the main driver files for certain system components. In my case folder 0012 was holding the basic nv4_disp.dll (etc) files and as such must have been prompting them to copy themselves bac to x:\windows\system32 when it didnt detect any others or older versions

Now, to see if the 30.82's will install okay

May I ask why the 52.16s with a GeForce 4? In your case it offers minimal benefit over the 4x.xxs.

Given the age of the card and the system its in it needs all the performance help it can get (when playing CoD anyways), so, given the image quality/detail hack slashery thats gone into optimising the 5x.xx's i thought i would try them out. Unfortunatly they appear to be just as troublesome as all the other Dets since 41.09

I stuck with 43.45 on my GeForce 4 MX and the IQ is excellent (and haven't encountered any problems with both new and old games). If you want a Forceware release that actually helps out GeForce 4s, try 56.55.

The 4x.xx's in general have been okay, however i was getting a lot of 'dark' diaplay/rendering issues, which the 30.82's have cleared up, back in the day when the ti4200 was the main card i ran the 41.09's happily until a number of issues regarding the way shadows were rendered in Splinter Cell cropped up. Im thinking of trying out the 40.72's tomorrow as they give about a 1000 mark jump in 3dmark01 by all accounts, which could be handy. In fact, if anyone knows of a det comparison article/database for the 3x.xx-4x.xx's i wouldnt mind a lookie

May I ask why nvidia stopped writing new drivers for the geforce 4? I haven't been able to use a driver past 44.09 without severe problems and 44.09 and before are far from perfect. Now that's sweet support.

Start your own thread so that these severe problems can be looked into. And if you bothered to read the whole thread, you would know that I mentioned 56.55 for GeForce 4 owners.

For a G4 I'd have to say the best performance/IQ is going to come from the 4x series, the 5x.xx might resolve some issues with newer games, but you'll pay a price in performance along with IQ. Same with ATI using the latest drivers, you'll get a broader range of support for titles, but the best performance is probably going to be with their generation of drivers (though with their poor support in the past compared to present, they could actually improve them more than nvidia has leeway too as they had a very solid driver set at the time).

The companies have to drop optimizations for older lines for the new line that is out. Nvidia and ATI both admit they do this, they really don't have a choice unless you want to see some REALLY large d/l's for drivers and I already have to d/l overnight to update my graphics drivers.
