I have a 20 GB hard drive (western digital) with barely any programs on it. I am trying to use my windows media player and I have like 7 albums on it but it keeps saying "Low Disc Space."
I don't know what to do or how to repair this issue. This is ridiculous to me. Could someone offer me some help or suggestions? I would really appreciate it.

did you scan for viruses and spyware?
did you run a scan of the hdd using the manufacturer's diags?
did you run memtest?

I am unfamiliar with these things and don't know how to perform any of these tasks. These are new problems etc. and would require major assistance. Could you tell me how to do the memtest thingy? Actually all of them would be helpful. I would really appreciate it.:(

if you don't have antivirus (which is probably why you are having problems), you can download AVG for free.
http://www.grisoft.com/html/us_index.htm
get adaware. install it, update it, run it. pretty straight forward.
http://lavasoft.element5.com/support/download/
That will probably solve your problems, but you can check hardware after that.
you'll have to go to your hdd manufacturer's site to download the file and get instructions.
all you gotta do for memtest is download the file, create the boot floppy and reboot the system. just read the instruction readme.

1. Is this your only drive?
2. How much free space does windows explorer show?
3. Is this drive used for your swap file?
4. What are those "albums" saved as?
5. What are the rest of your system specs?
Don't think it is a memory problem, maybe other problem. Should be moved to Data Storage???

A 20Gig harddrive, with a windows OS (WHICH ONE????) installed, some programs installed (how much space did these take?), 7 albums on the drive, how much downloaded programs are on this drive?, is the Temp folder empty?, Temporary Internet Folder empty?. And you want to know where all the space on a 20Gig hard drive has gone!
And as BPB has already stated about virus' and spyware.

Hi, just do as Midknyte suggest, It's not that hard. Do the AVG first and then download and run Adaware 6 as he said. just read the instructions for first time use, update it, and scan for spyware.
Unless you are talking about burning to a CD that has low disk space????

I am using windows xp professional. I have norton 2002 professional. I deleted four viruses and ran norton obc and window doctor. Did a chkdsk /r and chkdsk /p check and it fixed. I have adaware 6 but it's at my girlfriends house. I will get it tonight. That's pretty much it. I have used this computer countless time and I have never had a memory problem. I installed norton internet security after the virus deletion. :(

I deleted 4 viruses. My virus program was up to date before I did that. I tried to run system restore but I don't have enough memory.

It might be good to turn system restore off and run virus scan again. you could have the virus in your restore data. Ofcourse this will dump your restore information. Hope you backed up your system before you had the virus. do you know how to check your disk space? You may be able to run system restore from safe mode. But you may be putting the virus back on also.
(you may have too much stuff (maybe a worm) and spyware running eating up memory) Run Adaware before trying sys restore.)
Ok, low disk space is low storage.
Low memory is low system memory which is different than low storage. So which is it? Memory and storage (disk space) are two different things and two different pieces of hardware.
Clean up some garbage on ur HD
1: Temporary Internet Files: Right click the Internet Explorer icon on desk top > Properties > On Gerneral Tab Delete Cookies, Delete Files > Close
2: Emty ur Temp folders: Do a search for temp > If u find a folder named Temp u can open it, just double click it, explorer will open, delete these files, they souldn't be needed an most r put there an temporary storage.
NOTE: The Temp folders will be in ur Documents and Settings > Subfolder an maybe in ur Windows folder. Some programs may also make a temp or cache folder, PS 7 keeps a folder for the File Browser an it can get big !

And run Norton 'Clean and safe cleanup" if you have it.

You may want to check the "delete all off line content" when clearing internet temp files on the delete files tab.

HELLO! Am I missing something?? The hard drive is FULL, and is the master and/or only drive in the system. Virus/adaware have nothing to do with it. Windows, Norton, 7 albums, and a few other programs, oops, I forgot about, fill a 20 gig REAL fast. Let's see, MS Office, couple o' gigs, MS Encarta, 6 gig's, OS couple more, what ever games and their files, oh yea, something called swap file???
A billion here, a billion there, pretty soon we're talking about real money...
AGAIN: Computers 101:
In Windows Explorer, under properties, space used, free space, and what programs/files are there. Ain't hard. Maybe can gain a couple o' hundred meg by cleaning it up, not too difficult either.
Memtest, adaware, none of these have anything to do with the error message "Low Disk Space", it's a almost full drive. Got that from Windows For Dummies.
Solution: delete a few programs/files or get another hard drive,,,

Low disk space can also be caused by pagefile errors. The pagefile keeps expanding and expanding until the system says it's out of memory. There are viruses that can do that.

If you don't have norton utilities, go for the above!!!:t
Tweb knows what to do!!! This may give you enough room to install Adaware and or Spybot to clear up spyware and some worms.

Darn it. Right-click the C: drive and select Properties. How much total space is there? How much is used?
I'll ask again. Are hidden files disabled? Look in Tools > Folder Options > View.
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html
Answer the questions please.
If you had 4 viruses detected, there are likely more. I you were running an AV program, you have to ask yourself why these viruses wren't detected when they first arrived. It's likely because the AV program was either not updated or not working properly. Scan with this:
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm
When done, uninstall your AV program and then reinstall and update it immediately.

If I don't get a proper response to my question about hidden files right now, I'm going to close this thread. I'm warning you.
Your hard drive is full. Start throwing things out or move them to another drive.

BPB I did as you asked with the c drive and I made it as far as the tools. I didn't see the hidden files disabler. I'm new at this but trying. Please be patient. I don't have much at all on my hard drive so It couldn't be full. Could you tell me in detail how to get to hidden files? I right clicked the c drive then I clicked properties then I clicked tools but I don't see the hidden files feature on xp.

I gave you a link to a page about it. Go back and click on the link.
You have a 20GB hard drive. The actual usable volume of a 20GB drive is about 18.7GB. You have 18.6GB used. It's full. There's no argument on that.
Your pagefile is on drive C:. It has to be able to expand during use. It can't expand because there's no room. That's what the memory error means. You can try moving the pagefile to another drive:
http://www.thosecomputergeeks.net/ow.asp?MoveThePagingFile
That is only a temporary fix though. You have too much data on your C drive. You have to either move the data or get a bigger drive.

So delete or move the albums.
