This sounds interesting, does anyone know where I can get more info?

Here's only 1 link:-

http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/memory/display/20040213210313.html

Google search 'GDDR-3 Memory' and you'll find many more.

goodie more pretty pictures :p , at least it will give ATI some competition agian .. nVidia was down for a pretty long time in sales compaired to ATI

I still think ATI = King tho ... I'm sure they already have something in the works similar to this they just dont always come out in public like nvidia does way before releaseing it :p

Couple comments..why on the 5700 ultra? Wouldnt the 5900 with the better core benefit from this?

It's probably more affordable on the 5700 Ultra than the 5950's.:t

In reality the current core probably gets little to no gain from GDDR-3 so the cost of putting it on the 5950 or 5900 Ultra would cut deeply into nvidia's cost as they can't raise the price of those cards much if any while on the 5700's they can raise it somewhat just because of the memory, even if it has little impact on performance due to the price range it is in.

This sounds kind of funny but good anaylisys Someone Stupid, its about what the comsumer can afford. Not Bill Gates:D

hopefully this means the new pci express boards that we will be seeing soon will have this new memory as well

Unquestionably.

Do remember that GDDR-3 is designed for higher speeds, so will be easier to manufacture for lower speed bins. At first, it will be more expensive, but in the end, the overall cost is lower. That and the fact that the company can charge more by advertising the memory as a special feature.

here here, yes competition is good....

if i recall this memory technology was developed by ati and micron, but they were not going to seek royalties for other vendors using it..... i think....

it looked like hacked ddr2 and 3 specs to cater specifically to what graphics cards need.

One reason for going to GDDR3 on the 5700 rather than the 5950 is that the 5700 already uses DDR2 while the 5950 uses DDR1.

One side-effect of this is that shifting to GDDR3 on the 5700 won't have the price effect it would have on the 5950, since DDR2 is already more expensive than DDR1.
