Hi all,

Not sure where to go, so I'll try here and the device board.
Thanks for lending an ear... I could really use some help:

I have a Yamaha CDR drive and a Pioneer DVD-R drive. Both were working fine - until I installed Recordnow software for burning DVD images. It locked up on me and I closed it when it was not responding. On reboot - both drives don't show up. The Yamaha does (sometimes) show up when I search under "add/remove hardware" and shows this:

"This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)"

I've tried to update the driver but it still won't show up. The pioneer won't even open up and doesn't show up anywhere. I get an error when I boot up about it but I don't know what to change (if anything) in the set up utility (F2).

Where do I go from here?
I've tried what I know, but I can't seem to solve it.

And oh yeah - I'm supposed to burn a dvd for a client tomorrow :-)

When it rains...

Thanks a million,

diesel

Wrong forum - moved.

This is the most common question in regards to CD drives.

All

I've followed all the links and I still can't get back my drives. I've:

Uninstalled RecordNow and Easy CD Creator
Followed the "clear registry" instructions for ECD creator

Any suggestions on where to go next would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Not sure of the OS he's working with but if it's 98, Easy CD Creator messes with the ASPI layer which is then hosed if you uninstall the program. From there I've only been successful with doing a reinstall of the OS.

Have you tried rebooting into Safe Mode, removing the drives and rebooting?

Have you done this?

To resolve this behavior, follow these steps:
Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
Locate the UpperFilters value under the following key in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
Locate the LowerFilters value under the same key in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
Quit Registry Editor.NOTE: After you remove the Upperfilters value and the Lowerfilters value, if you notice lost functionality in a particular program, such as CD recording software, you may need to reinstall that software. If the problem recurs, consult with the software vendor for assistance.

Restart your computer.
STATUS
This is a known issue that can occur when you remove Easy CD Creator version 5.01 or earlier or DirectCD version 3.01c or earlier. This issue may also occur with Easy CD Creator version 5.01 and with DirectCD 3.01d or later.
MORE INFORMATION
There may be other third-party CD-writing software products that exhibit similar behavior. Some or all of the troubleshooting steps in this article might apply if such a product also adds entries under the UpperFilters or LowerFilters value in the registry, either by adding its own filter drivers or by removing the registry keys and values outlined in this article that begin with:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

(BipolarBill - just noticed your icon. It felt like a mirror :-)

Yes - I've deleted the high and lowkey.

Problem with deleting the drive is that it doesn't show up anymore in device manager. I sometimes get the "software unplugged" pop-up now saying the device was not removed correctly.

Any of this make sense?
Problem is, I don't know where to go next....

Thanks for the continued help.

I said Safe Mode. Press F8 while restarting to get the menu.

You haven't told us your Windows version yet. Look here:

http://tinyurl.com/2fwb

If it's Win2K/XP, click View > Show hidden devices before looking for the drive.

It really sounds like a bad drive, frankly, but try.

I'm running win2k pro.

I did look in safe mode, but it didn't show any CDrom device. I'm 90% sure I click "show hidden", but I'll check that again now.

I've thought about it being a bad drive, but it's just too much of a coincidence that it happened immedialty after I installed and ran RecordNow for the first time. Plus, there seems to be known issues around it (I just can't seem to solve mine).

FYI - the "show hidden files" doesn't show the drives in device manager

BipolarBill

"Show hidden files" only concerns files - not devices in Device Manager.

Could you please be clear about what you're doing?

WAIT - I may be getting somewhere....

I was able to see the drive in Safe Mode under Add/Remove hardware and choosing a specific device and checking "view hidden" (i'm sorry if this is what you were asking for, but your example showed Device Manager).

Am I on the right track?
Should I remove both drives this way, or just the first?
What should happen/should I do when I reboot?

THanks

sorry - I meant "hidden devices"

see previous post for more info

Remove them and restart.

Thanks - in process

**** - still don't show up and they aren't seen as a "plug and play" device...

Somewhere else I should look?

Perhaps you should just back up your data and reinstall Windows. It would be faster.

I forgot one more aspect that might help (sorry, I'm a bit frazzled)

When I boot, I get the following errors:

Primary hard disk drive 1 not found
Secondary hard disk drive 0 not found
Secondary hard disk drive 1 not found

It gives me the option to go into setup with F2, but I don't know what to do once in.

Thanks a million

I dread this.

Your CD drives are not being detected by the motherboard. You need to carefully examine the cables and connections. You need to try connecting the drives differently if that checks out. One of your CD drives is the master and one is a slave. Try reversing the positions and then changing the drive jumpers accordingly.

OK - I'm going in! (i dread this too ;-0)

Could installing software cause a problem this deep? Or could it just be a very suspicious coincidence?

hmmm...

BipolarBill
03-04-2004, 04:29 PM
No - this is a hardware issue. The Master drive may have died. Once that happens, the slave can't work. It needs a master.

thediesel
03-04-2004, 04:59 PM
AH - I'm gettting close!

I switched the slave/master relationship and now they both show up - BUT, the Master (my pioneer dvd writer) won't let me read from it. Device manager says it's working ok. I can read from my slave.

Possible causes?

Check the drives carefully in the rear. See if any pins have collapsed. Try jumpering both drives as CS (cable select).
