What to read ???/

I have two computers, one desktop and the other a laptop. I would like to join them in a network. However before I do that I would like to read about networks how to set them up, how to maintain them etc etc....In other words I would like to be a little literate about them. Can someone point me in the direction of some literature... viz... books, articles, magazines, forums, websites etc etc so that i can begin educating myself on the subject.
