2600+ T-Bred B I think. The colour doesn't matter - some are brown, some are green. I don't think it has anything to do with age - my Barton 2500+ is green, and that's pretty new.

That's a 2600+ chip, you actually got an upgrade :) I do know that the "older" XP's have a square core, and the newer ones have the rectangle like yours has. The green vs brown shouldn't matter, it's just fiberglass and has no effect at all on the chip. Mine is an 1800+ and it's brown, and square core.

You can also plug it in to this site and try it out

Congrats on your free upgrade :t

Looks like an Athlon XP 2600+ (333Mhz FSB Thoroughbred "B"). You certainly got an upgrade. :)

Dunno if this is certainly true, but when I've bought Athlon XPs from Fry's, the bare (OEM) ones were brown while the retail boxed ones were green.

That's interesting, and I guess would make sense. Everyone I know pretty much has bought OEM, and we all have brown ones. I've never actually seen a green one. . . we're all a bunch of cheapskates :p

most people here dont need anything more than OEMs anyway.. I'm sure most dont use the stock hsf and dont really need a warruntee since they void it almost immediately by overclocking anyway..

Yea, but for the few of us who build computers for others, retail CPUs are better.

Well sometimes there's not enough price difference to even worry about it. A friend of mine bought retail 2500 just because it was only $5 more than the OEM, and then he got HSF (even if he wasn't using it) and 3 year warrenty.

They had to, they were getting sued for making people fat ('cause you know, they forced people at gunpoint to order the supersize).

Gotta love the US. . . land of the free(if you consider patriot act freedom), the super size(often FOR free, or near it), and the stupid lawsuits!

The brown ones actually came first, then the green ones came later... That doesn't mean that your brown is older than my green, it just means the oldest brown one is older than the oldest green one.

AMD was reported to start phasing out the brown when they introduced the green, but that didn't happen as they're still producing both.

I've yet to see a retail CPU with a brown chip, all the ones i've had were green. I do know that the ONLY Barton 2500+ that I haven't been able to successfully overclock to 3200+ specs was a brown OEM one. Its the only brown Barton i've came accross though, so thats not enough to make a judgment call.
