I have a 40G HDD installed currently. Bought a Maxtor 160 G. <- Larger than 137 \\ Bundled with this drive a copy of Maxtor Blast 3.

I am using Windows XP Pro Sp 1 has NOT been installed.
I am using an ASUS A7N8X non-deluxe.

I want to make a Disk image so the new HDD will be the boot drive. I dont have Ghost. I do have Alcohol 120% and Scooby Doo 2 Monsters Unleashed.

Questions:

Maxtor Blast 3 any good?? or Alcohol %120 will it do this??

Will the Mobo see that this drive is Larger than 137G and make the necessary changes?? Will I have to install Max Blast 3??

I'm guessing that your bios already recognizes the 160 drive. if not, get the latest update.

first, install SP1. You need that to support the larger drives.

after that, just run diskmgmt.msc. partition and format the drive.

you don't need to use anything else besides diskmgmt.

So disk management in XP pro offers the ability to make a disk image to a new HDD??

Just to be thorough. I am installing a new HDD. I am going to make a disk image of the HDD currently installed. I am then going to use the newly installed HDD as the boot disk. Use old HDD in a different system I am selling. Clear as water?? So I will not need to do anything, but install SP1 and I am good to go??

Sorry the above answer just seems to easy.

Use BootItNG:

www.bootitng.com

It's slow but it works. Whatever you do, do not install the boot manager.

Heheh up an running one funny thing to add. I tried to access System restore - to get a new restore point. I am getting an error message when I click on the System Restore tab. I can't even access that part of the Computer Properties window. Got everything backed up now though.

missed the restore image part. sorry, I was rushing to get out of the office.

Ghost is definitely a product worth paying for. You can try using NTbackup, but that honestly sucks.

Started having a lot of errors with for mentioned process - Did a complete format of the drive - copied over all progams running smoother and MUCH faster. Seems to be the way to go these days. Just to add no problems in activating either. I think this was the third or fourth activation with this WinXP pro disk. How many do I have left??

don't know - but MaxBlast3 has never worked for me cloing XP drives - use Ghost or something similar.

I did a clean zap, reinstall, etc. - took a few hours but XP is no different than the others - reformat and reinstall every so often - I had to because I was swapping RAM and corrupted a bunch of files - only do it when I have, to but major improvements.....:t
