I am considering buying one of the Thermalright SLK series heatsinks. What I am wondering is if is worth buying one of the newer ones or I am better off buying one of the older ones like the SLK-700 or SLK-800? I am currently using the retail HSF that came with my Athlon XP 3200 and I am running at 50C-55C when in windows without doing anything.

I have a SLK-800A on a 2600+ with a v-core of 1.75 and my temps usally are idle around 36-39 C
Correction on the v-core.

AFAIK, the SLK-700 is not designed to mount an 80MM fan... I would suggest going with a newer heatsink if you intend to run a low-speed/quiet fan.

My main concern is temp. The noise is not something that bothers me because usually my speakers are much louder than the machine and I really don't hear the machine when I am on it. Please keep 'em coming:D

I'm running a ducted slk900a with a Tt smart fan II it stays at 35or 36C loaded (depending on the OC). Currently running a 2500 @ 1.675V and 2.3GHz (it will go beyond 2.4GHz). I would put it (with the duct) up against the Swiftech water cooling setup that I used to run a couple of years ago (I'm sold on ducts). As I recall the temps were comparable and water was much more hassel.
Enjoy!

Your talking about the Thermaltake Ducting Mod with the fan? Is it easy to hook up to the slk900a(which is the one I am looking to get)? Thanks:t

Actually, I used 3 Tt ducting mods and a homemade adaptor there is a pic near the end of this thread;

I used some 1/4 inch lexan and a part from a Sunbeam duct to make the adaptor. It was not particularly dificult. I also relocated the powersupply to the bottom of my case and used its hole for an exhaust fan. My case is extra wide so it is doubtful that the same exact mod will fit other cases, but it can probably be modified.

Take at look at some reviews and see what kind of temps people are getting with the SLK-700 and newer heatsinks (there are some comparison reviews of the Thermalright products as well). If you fine not running an 80MM (or larger) fan or needing an adapter to do so then you would probably be fine with the SLK-700... you could find one pretty cheap as newer models are out. Otherwise, the newer SLK's do perform a bit better and, if you go with one of the SLK-xxxU heatsinks, they mount via bolts travelling through the motherboard... which is a tad more secure. :)
Also, check for compatibility with your motherboad just to be sure it will work...
