Okay, I have been toying with the idea of starting a small bussiness--online bussines-- but i don't know where to start. I need to know:
where to get a tax ID and how much they cost (State of IL) and if I need one.
Where to get a reseller's license, how much they cost, do I need a different one for different kinds of products?
What I will probably be doing is selling stuff on auction sites and maybe from my webpage (hell I paid for it over a year ago, I may as well use the domain for something!) If you all can point me in the right direction of where to go read about this info online I would appreciate it.

Hi SS - best of luck on your venture.

Going online for your research is a good place to start.

There are numerous agencies that can be tapped, such as the SBA (Small Business Assoc.), BBB (Better Business Bureau), Chamber of Commerce, consumer agencies, legal aid sites, and business owners' forums to give you guidance on this process for starting up in your state.

As in NY, it may be as simple as contacting your State Sales Tax Division and requesting forms for a Resellers Certificate. A Tax ID # is assigned to you then.

I know in IN if you are a business, in your case it sounds like you will be a sole proprietorship, you are required to have a reseller tax ID & certificate. You should be able to contact your state's business department to get the appropriate forms.

IN has laws that govern how certain businesses are operated, but most can resell whatever they want without requiring other certificates. When it comes to various products, you typically need vendor authorization to resell certain products (ie. Novell, MS, HP, etc.). If your products come from a disributor, ask them about any special authorizations for various vendors.

When you get your tax certificate forms from the state, ask them specifically about online resellers. I'm sure some states require something different for online sales.

Hope this helps!
Good Luck!

In Kentucky all I had to do was visit the Revenue Cabinet and they were more than willing to give me a sales and use tax permit. Of course I haven't seen many government operations that wouldn't be happy to have you collect some more taxes for them. Especially since they don't have to pay you for your efforts!
