I just installed a Albatron KX-400-8XV board for a friend, using a Maxtor HD & XP-Pro, it boots up to the windows password screen, then when they put in their password, attempts to load windows, I see only the desktop background & no icons then it locks up, is this a hardware or windows issue?

Did you reinstall Windows? You should do so. The hardware is very different now. Alternatively, you can boot from the CD and try a repair:

You will likely have to reinstall eventually anyhow.

The hardrive came from a Compaq, I installed it in the new system, (had '98 on it) booted up the XP-pro cd within '98, then chose the clean install option (not upgrade).

This sounds like there is **** left over from Windows 98.
Do you have another computer that you can hook this hard drive into as a slave?
If so, search the drive for explorer.exe there should be only one, and it should be in the windows folder. If you find more than one, rename the others to explorer.old and then put the drive back and try to boot and see what it does.

Just set the computer to boot form the CD (in the BIOS set CD-ROM as first boot device). Put in the XP CD and do another Clean Install of Windows XP (http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html) -- good luck! :D
