I wonder if the average IQ rating of PC manufacturers is dropping! I recently saw a multimedia PC with a 56K internal PCI modem advertised with the following warning in small print: 'The speakerphone capabilities of the modem will require additional separate speakers'.
I have the same modem myself. It has no internal connector on the card itself to connect directly to the sound card and it has its own speaker and mic ports on the bracket. But, hey!, why should it need its own separate speakers?
Look at the back of the modem: a speaker OUTPUT connector. Look at the back of the sound card: a line INPUT connector. It doesn't take an Einstein to figure! I ran a short lead with a stereo jack on each end between the two and - guess what! - the speakerphone now works through the speakers on the sound card! No additional speakers needed at all!
I hate to speak ill of the great PC makers but - dare I say it? - maybe they were just trying to get some dope to buy an additional pair of speakers ;-)
(BTW, okay, I'll admit I was a dope to buy such a cheapo modem too but it does work absolutely perfectly - steady as a rock - and I only use it for surfing, not CPU intensive stuff like online gaming.)
