I'm building a sort of complicated shelf, I was just wondering if there were any free type programs to help me figgure this out. (that assist with design and measurment)

Thanks a bunch :t

I did that too, but a program on the computer can do it better.

Just use a pencil and paper man!
All the PC programss I've used for similar things just suck. First you have the learn how to use them, then you can do some designing.
In the same time you could have designed and actually built the shelf if you use the low-tech approach.

Visio, but it's a bit overkill for a shelf, and expensive. I'd just use a pencil and paper, except that I have visio already. It works well. Any pre M$ Version is what I would recommend, particularly Visio tech 5.0C. Try Ebay

Building a shelf or anything else by hand does not work in practice if you use a computer to calculate the dimensions. You will need to learn how to use a tape measure, square and saw. Now if you want a machine do do the work you need CNC (computer numerical control) tools and the materials will all have to be dimensioned to exact dimensions, which you won't find at your local Ace Hardware (if you can find anything you want in the first place at Ace Hardware). Engineers design things with CAD programs but builders never use the exact dimensions because it is an imperfect world.

Julia Childs put out a cookbook which might help if you are so mentally impaired. :p

I use AutoCAD everyday and even I would choose pencil and paper for any sort of carpentry I planned to do myself!

Yeah - a CNC Mill would probably cut your shelf brilliantly, but before you use that, you will need a CMM (co-ordinate measuring machine) to probe the dimensions of your wall, to make sure you can tell the CNC Mill to cut it to the perfect dimention, down to the nearest half a thou.

That's ok, but the CNC Mill, and the CMM will cost you a few quid, plus the fact - to run a CMM, you will need a precision granite bed installed in whatever room you need to measure up, and you must also have the room temperature controlled to avoid heat expansion/contraction.

Hope this is of some help to you.......

Cyan, if you don't own a table saw or a good power saw and use them once in a while, it might be good idea to buy a pre-built one, one of those you can finish yourself.
If not check out your local hardware store, they should have some books that should help you. Good Luck

Two boards + four bricks = shelf
For a taller shelf use concrete block.
For a bookcase add more layers.
Enjoy!
