I run win95 on pentium computer. One day I booted up and my modem didn't work. Went to device manager and modem wasn't listed. went to modems in ctr panel and modem was there but pressed more info and got messge "couldn't open port". Ran hardware wizard and if found and installed a com port. After rebooting everything was back to normal....

Here's the problem: When I cold boot my computer at beginning of day, sometimes the com port is there, and sometimes it is not. When it is not, I have to run hardware wizard to reinstall it.

Why does the system keep losing track of it?

It may be motherboard or modem physical mistake. My modem says it to sometime I change the mothrboard and now it is ok.
You can update motherboard bios it can help or buy a new modem

I had an almost identical problem, I bought a "cheapie" Jaton modem and what you are describing happened to me. Get a good USR modem. Once I bought a good modem, the problem went away.

Check the com port settings in the BIOS. I've had the external com 2 port screw up on 2 different computers when I was using anything on com 4. It wasn't an IRQ problem, it was completely disabling the port. Try changing the settings in the BIOS from "auto" to the specific settings. Worked for me. Twice. Good luck.
