Anyone else tried a Retail Box PPGA Celeron (Socket 370)?
I'm using one (SL35Q - 300A)and the fan has only 2 attached wires, not the 3 wire detachable fan cable on the Slot One Celeron and PentiumII fans.
Although powers the fan, you can't use a fan speed monitoring program.

Bottom line, did Intel just get cheeper, or did I draw a defective fan?

Thanks
Andrew

I have never seen a CPU fax with 3 wires. 2 is perfectly normal. Simply connect it to the FAN connector on the motherboard, near the CPU.

Thanks for the input, but clearly you've never worked with Retail CPU's or had any suscess with any of the hardware monitoring programs.

They REQUIRE (and so far Intel HAS supplied) a 3 wire cable between fan and motherboard.

By the way this requirement also holds for extra case fans. Somebody's been ripping you off!
Luck

No arklab..AMD and Intel send out 2 wire fans except on the PII retail chips

Why do extra case fans require 3 wires??? I have installed numerous case fans with just 2 wires (1 positive and 1 negative). In fact the computer I am using now has a two wire CPU and case fan (I am looking at the wires this very moment).

The reason is you want to know when your fan craps out before something burns up.
I only use 3 wire fans unless the manufacture has a 2 wire that is glued to the chip and even then, I usually change the fan to a 3 wire.
Without a doubt, I only use 3 wire case fans.

JP,
I think the third wire is a signal wire responsible for reporting the fans RPM. It has nothing to do with supplying the fan with power.
