I recently reformatted my hard drive and installed Windows XP Pro. I created 4 user accounts (me/wife/2 children) with mine having administrator privledges.
However, when I, or another user attempts to switch from the current user account to their own user account (by pressing windows key + L), a box will pop up indicating that "this computer is in use and has been locked". The box that pops up also indicates that "only ****\****or an administrator can unlock this computer".
I then have to enter my windows xp logon password to unlock the computer. It has never done this before. How can I get it so I don't have to enter a password everytime someone wants to switch from an account to their own account??
Also, I did attempt to check the box 'use fast user switching' and click apply. When I reopen the window with the 'use fast user switching' the box isn't checked.
Thanks for your help!

The Windows key + L will lock the workstation in Windows XP, which is a handy privacy feature for anyone in an office full of nosey people!

Are you using the welcome screen logon interface or the Nt/2K esque logon

It never used to lock the computer when I would press the Windows key + L.
INSTEAD.....
It would log out of the current users account and onto the Windows logon screen with the four accounts. I liked it better this way.
Can anyone help me out with this?? I'm guessing it is some simple setting that I am overlooking. The box 'use fast user switching' will not stay checked I click apply, close the window and then reopen it to see if it is checked.
Thanks again for the continued help!

I am using the Welcome Screen logon (i think).
That box is checked in the USERS ACCOUNTS >> CHANGE THE WAY USERS LOG ON AND OFF , and stays checked. It's the USE FAST USER SWITCHING box that will not stay checked after clicking APPLY OPTIONS

If the Fast User Switching feature is enabled and you lock the computer, you can observe the same behavior as if you switched users: The computer returns to the Welcome screen and other users can log on to the computer.

When I try to enable the 'use fast user switching' in the USER ACCOUNTS from within the CONTROL PANEL, the box will initially be checked. After clicking APPLY, I close down the window. However, when I reopen the window to ensure the 'use fast user switching' is enabled, the box isn't checked.
Any other ideas why the I cannot enable 'use fast user switching'???
Like I've explained, I've never had this problem b4 when I reformatted the hard drive. I was always able to press the Windows key + L and it would switch to the welcome screen. Now, I'm getting the box which indicates the computer is locked and I need to enter a password to unlock it.
Thanks for the continued support.

do you have the welcome screen enabled? you need to have the welcome screen enabled in order to use fast user switching. make sure that both are checked.

Did you join this system to a domain at any point?
I used VPN and when logged into the AD at work, my system got switched to the domain from the workgroup - I am not sure what I did. It caused this problem for me. I had to switch back to a workgroup for fast users switching and the welcome screen to work.

I don't remember joining the system to a domain. However, it may have been done by accident. I just reformatted my hard drive and installed Windows XP Pro.
I've reformatted/installed Windows XP Pro on my computer b4...and never had this problem.
do you have the welcome screen enabled
I do have the welcome screen enabled. I can see the check in the box. However, when I check the box for 'use fast user switching', click apply and exit, the box is still checked. When I go back into the user accounts and check to verify that the box is checked, IT ISN'T CHECKED (and I enabled it just seconds b4).
Like I mentioned, the welcome screen does work...I've got it enabled. It's the fast user switching that isn't working...and I've tried to enable it several times.
What do I need to do to make sure my computer is part of a workgroup and not a domain. I use only one computer in my house (it is not hooked to any other computer) and I'm using high speed broadband (cable modem......3MB speed).
Thanks for the continued support!

:t me again :t
I figured out why I could not use 'fast user switching'.......
I had the 'TERMINAL SERVICES' disabled in the SERVICES.MSC window.
After I enabled it, I was able to use 'fast user switching'.
Thanks to everyone that offered help!
