I have a question.

I did some work a while back for a friend, installing some RAM, Installing XP, moving some files over etc etc...and everything went fine.

I got a call from this person the other day and she is saying that the other night when she turned off her computer and booted it back up, that it asked for a username and pass to log on to Win XP.

I found this weird, becuase for one she said she has powered down many times before and never had this happen, and I Had it set up that it wouldnt even ask for a username and pass to log on to XP since she was the only person using the PC.

what do you guys think could be the problem??

One thing I had her try was to log on with no username/pass, and it will allow her to log on, but will not show all instaleld programs etc etc...

any ideas??

Thanks
Alan

She must log on to the system as the same user you set up initally. In XP if you have one user in addition to the Administrator, it will automatically log on as that user in normal startup. If you add another user, it will ask for a user. If you are getting the logon dialog box she would have needed to change some settings.

I would start by looking in Computer Management to see what users are there. Find her original username and log in that way. If the programs and settings are back go to the control panel in the users accounts applet and change the way users log on and off. Try changing the setting to use the welcome screen. Delete any users the person created to get the logon back to her preferred style.

i can not be of much more help as all of my XP boxes are on a domain and I get the security CTRL-ALT-DEL box and can not change back to the welcome screen.
