I borrowed this flick, cranked up the new Klipsch surround speakers and watched the first 10 minutes. You know, the part where they recap the ending of Fellowship of the Ring. My gosh! That 10 minutes is so tight when you crank up the volume! Can anyone relate to this???

The first 10 minutes of The Two Towers is awesome when the sound is cranked. The question was basically, "Has anyone else noticed this?"

If 'ALL the sound is loud' then you've either got a very crappy set of speakers/amp or your hearing is shot.
Either that or you listened to the DTS track, which has a 3dB increase to its bass levels and so fools people into believing that it is the better sound system, even though it screws about with the original theatrical soundtrack

However, it sure is a kick-*** show-off piece to demonstrate how your home theatre is better than your neighbour's :)

I'm talking about the whole 'volume=perceived quality' thing.
Just because something might sound loud does NOT mean that the quality is better than somehting that is quieter.
Most people haven't a clue about this sort of thing, they just equate volume with quality so the louder something is the better they say it sounds.
DTS cheat a bit by increasing the bass volume by a significant ammount. Turn it down to the theatrical release levels and the whole soundtrack suffers in comparison to plain old Dolby Digital and people will say that it doesn't sound as good.

The 1st 10 minutes does have some loud pieces, but the dynamic range (difference between softest and loudest sound) is very large. If you say the whole thing sounded loud then there is something wrong, either with your system not being optimally setup, or your ears being too big or something :)

Get hold of a copy of 'The Ultimate DVD-Platinum Ed.' Its got all the home theatre setup stuff you could ever want and will get your system sounding correct.
I setup peoples HT systems as a sideline to my main job, and the ultimate DVD has been invaluable.

I can't even use DTS, but I was under the impression that DTS was the better sound option. I guess I was wrong. I will have to run that by my buddy.

Zybch, I assume that you use a home theater type system for your PC?

DTS is just like Dolby Digital except that the sound is generally a bit less compressed and the bass frequencies under 20kHz get a 3dB boost (or something near 3). It therefore takes up a lot more space than a DD track, 500Mb instead of 350Mb for a 2 hour film.
Its a bit like comparing a 128k mp3 to a 160k one. Most people can't tell the difference. Those that can will generally think the DTS track sounds better but its just because it appears louder.
DD is still the format the the majority of cinemas use and is what ALL DVD movies use as its part of the DVD standard while DTS isn't.
The newer DD-ES and DTS-EX are the 6.1 and 7.1 sound mixes.
Only DTS has 7.1 discrete (seperate) tracks. DD matrix encodes in the extra tracks into the rear channels in exactly the same way that dolby pro logic does with the rear/centre tracks.

I have a pretty standard PC but connected to a beautiful Boston Accoustics digital amp and 5.1 flat panel speakers.
My home theatre is a bit special though. 7.1 surround (DD&DTS), NEC projector with 2.5m screen size, 3 DVD players :) and 2 seperate amps. When I add the 2nd floor to my house, I'll be able to increase the screen size as I'll be able to have the projector further away from the screen.

As I said before, I set up other peoples HT systems as a seperate income stream. Its astounding how many people (99%) don't seem to have a clue about speaker placement, ballances and room accoustics. I'm not complaining though, it keeps me in pocket money.

Sorry about the image quality. My camera is not all that great in low light conditions. The screen is actually silver/white, not yellow :)

One nice Hitachi that has had the macrovision disabled so I can do DVD-Tape transfers for people.

A Toshiba that has one of the best component video outputs ever to drive the projector. I tried others but they all were incapable of a really good image at 2.5m.

A cruddy cheap-as-chips Digitor to test out DVD-R copies. If it doesn't have any playback problems with copied disks they will work on anything.

when you crank it up?

sound has absolutely nothing to do with volume. however referring to the quelity of it yes, it sounds great on our new onkyo 6.1 system :p

quality and quantity is what it comes down to

Me quality is everthing when it comes to sound, and I agree the 3db increase can fool some and distort the sound, i also agree unless you're a serious audiophile the difference may not be noticeable. the type of system you have is a factor also, so if you're enjoying it who cares what others think, they didn't buy it you did:t :t

Yes, I know what you mean. I just watched that part again yesterday and loved it!

What about the in the 2nd part of two towers when the dogs are about to attack the villagers on their way to Hells Gate. You can hear each Dog get shot by with an arrow!

Where can one get their hands on a copy of the 'The Ultimate DVD-Platinum Ed.

Sound like a sweet system zybch, I just picked up a Denon with Boston Acoustics 75 fronts and CRC center. Could not be happier!

It would seem that The Ultimate DVD isn't easily available any more, at least in stores.

You could order it from ezdvd.com here in Oz though.
http://www.ezydvd.com.au/item.zml/222730

Or Amazon.com
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1575238470/103-5445405-5616639?v=glance

The US price is just stupid, considering you can get it for A$27.25 (no tax on exports) which would end up being less than 1/2 the US price of US$39.95 once exchange rates are calculated even with extra for postage.

Its region free and is NTSC format so its playable just about anywhere.
It comes with a special blue filter so you can correctly calibrate your TV as well as speaker system.
