Just installed a FIC VX98 MB, chipset VIA Apollo 580VPX. When 98 comes up, it issues a msg that it can't detect a mouse. I am using the Comm1 port on the MB, have tried Comm2, changed the Comm/IRQs, and can't get a mouse. The mouse worked onthe old system, and works on a laptop 166MHz with 98, but not on the new system.
Found a "requirement" for this board to enable USB in the BIOS BEFORE loading 98, even though no USB devices are present, no mouse but it did let me get to the PCI modem. Found a new patch for the IRQ, installed it, no mouse. Any ideas, pleeezzzz...

Same problem, no mouse under Win98 for Matsonic 6260s motherboard. I've tried both COM ports, the PS/2 port, every conceivable BIOS setting.

ALI 1541-43 controller.

I have two of them, identical behavior in each, so I think it's a configuration problem.

Any ideas are welcome.

I finally found my problem/s. Primarily, I didn't have the com cbl plugged in. Positioning of the RAM above the com plugs, and the IDE cables directly below, made it very difficult to get the com cbls in, much less to see anything. Also, had to go in the BIOS and define the IRQ for the modem, change the PCI PNP from auto to manual and assign PCI to certain slots from ISA/PCI. Finally, pulling cards out, booting, turning off, plugging cards back in, and rebooting helped clear things. Unfortunately, I'm not sure which of the steps was just wasted time. :-/

Ran across this problem once before as well. It turned out that serial ports are not all wired the same. Make sure that you use the ports that came with the board, and not ones from previous installs. Not sure if that explains what is happening to you, but it's worth a shot.
