How much should I spend on my new PC?

This guy is building me a PC for $800 Canadian, Iam Canadian!

He is puting in a P4 3.0 a Radeon 9800 or something like that. A neon light case and some other in expensive bells and whistles. 40 Gig hd

Is that a good price? Or should I find one sowewhere else? He isn't giving me a monitor. sorry that this thread is so personal, but I need a new PC for myself, seeing as I'm using thee family one.

oooops...

you will be lucky if you can get a full system with a 9800 card and a p4C 2.8 in there for 800 canadia bucks. Thats only about £320 UK pounds.....that what it will cost you to buy a 3.0Ghz P4 and motherboard...nevermind everything else that you need!

So if the guy is legit, then it sounds like a great deal.

How much is 800 canadian dollars converted to US dollars. And I don't know if a 40 GB harddrive is going to be big enough. My advice would be to get a bigger hard drive.

800 CAD is roughly $595 USD. Not going to get a 9800 and P4 3.0 GHz for that (with the other components). You should get a detailed list of the parts (with brand names). My bet is he's going to get you a 9800SE or even 9600SE video card. Tell him you do not want any se video card. Also, he might be thinking of an AMD 3000+ CPU (which would be great). GOod luck! :D

Sounds good, cause AMD is cheaper and I can save a few bucks from some other components. He is sending me an E-mail with all the specs so I'll tell you the rest when I get it.:t

It also depends if you really need all that good stuff, which u probably will use if ur posting in the gaming section. Anyways 40gb, to me isn't enuf nowadays unless the machine is for strcictly gaming, it'll be fine, and if you're really gonna get a p4 3ghz and a radeon 9800pro for 800$ canadian, it kinda seems like everything else is gonna be junk.
P4 3.0GHz $339.95
Radeon 9800Pro $399.95
=$739.90 plus tax, it seems like ur close to $800
(im from canada too, prices from local stores)
The video card is probably gonna be powered by ATi rather than build by ATi, which isnt that bad. But if u can get it at this price, go for it, but make sure itsa decent power supply, and before u take it home, check through it all and make sure hes not ripping you off. :t

Dude, buy all the parts yourself, then assemble it yourself, we will walk you through the process. it's not hard at all, it's actually fun. And I gurantee you will get a good system if you do it yourself and consult us.

Athlon XP3000+ $155
Abit NF7-S $100
Ati Radeon 9700 $200
Western Digital 80GB $65
512mb DDR400 $75
Creative Audigy ES $40 @ Usdepot.com

Then get a good case w/ power supply, Windows XP home, and all the other little stuff including a decent 17'' CRT monitor. that should come in under $800. If not, then get a cheaper video card and cpu, you can save $100 right there.

I have built PC's for under $600, and they are good, but very budget. We are talking about XP1800 cpu w/ 512 DDR400 and an FX5200 128mb video card with an 80GB HDD. That's not bad at all, but it's not high end either. it'll get the job done.

If you do it right, you can overclock your stuff and save about $100

That is a pretty over-priced system cloudsquall. I would change a few things...

1). First and foremost, I would dump that video card. Do not buy ANY video card that ends in SE, they are junk. A nice ATI 9600 Pro or XT would be great.

2). Get an AthlonXP 2500+ Barton CPU and some Crucial PC3200 DDR RAM.

3). Dump the two 40 GB HDD's and the RAID controller card and get 1 74 GB SATA WD Raptor HDD (maybe another IDE HDD for storage).

4). Dump the Kingwin 350W PSU and get at least a 350W Sparkle, Antec, Fortron, or Enermax PSU (400W+ preferably).

5). Consider dumping the Creative Sound Card -- you have decent on-board sound already.

6). Look for better prices too. As pointed out before, buy the parts yourself and build your own. We'll help if needed. Good luck! :D

Thanks for all the help guys, girls. Befor I start building it myself I need some sort of cashflow. I'm going to start selling band t=shirts you know, Rancid, Misfits, ACDC, Iron Maiden t-shirts to people at my school at $15-$20 bux a pop. I think I'll need to sell about 40-60 shirts before I camn buy all the components. The only problem is I'm not that good at putting all the components in.

I can maybe get the PC for less if he doesn't buy the stuff retail, I said to buy it from the producers at a whole sale price. Thanks for the sopport:t

Give me a list of all thecomponents I'l need to make a better than average gaming machine, without going over the top like a SUPER ALIEN (for rich kids). I just need above average stuff that doesn't cost an organ and a leg or what have you.

stuff that runs Halo smoothly without lag and good detailed graphics if you will.

As long as it's not an SE model. In the US, you can get a 9600 NON-SE for $95 USD shipped. $130 CAD is about $97 USD so that would be good. Good luck! :D
