I have an intermittant problem. PC1 with Win XP Pro, PC2 with Win XP Pro. On PC1, I try to drag and drop a file onto my desktop. It says, "Access is denied: Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use."

I have a parent folder where the file is stored as Shared so I expect the subfolders to be shared also.

It did work but has just stopped! (It has stopped on both PC's that access PC2.)

Any ideas? How do I diagnose?

Regards,

Jon

there's prolly another solution but i'l call this a workaround. Give your user admin rights and drop the file on your desktop using the admin shares.

It sounds like a permissions issue, check Comp management> shares. But i don't understand why you would get this intermittantly and not constant. Try removing the share and add it again?

By intermittent, I am going to assume you mean it used to work, now it doesn't, and you aren't sure what changed.

Besides the share permissions, the ACLs on shared files can also prevent file sharing. You need to ensure shared files are at least readable to the accounts needing access. This is simplest if PC1 and PC2 are on a domain.

No domain? Well, if LAN security is not a concern, you could open the shares to "everyone".

Or, you can map a drive onto you PC2 share, use the "connect as ..." option, and name an account on PC2 with rights to your shared area. You will be prompted for the password when you do this.
