Hi.

My question is, what's the best OS (window's only) for gaming and 3D performance? Win 2000 (pro, server,...) or Win XP (Pro, home,...)

Thanks

There are some issues with loder games and Win2K that have been corrected in XP, but then again, some have not. Win2K wasn't targeted towards game support (that was left to WinME :p) but XP was developed taking more in consideration that kind of usage. My vote goes for XP, unless you have a slow system.

but the XP is more slowly than the 2k in 3D Performance??

*the english isn't my native language

-*-example:

in Q3 or 3Dmark, I'll have more FPS/3Dmarks with 2K or XP??

thanks

That's a good question; though I never tested that, I doubt it will happen if you have a system good enough to handle WinXP.

Definitely! If you got some 512MB and a good video card (R9600 and above) go for XP without any doubt...besides, if you want Hyperthreading XP is the only one offering certified support

XP is ussualy better for any later up to date hardware systems, I ran games just as fine with 2k on my old 800mhz duron. Its more updated then 2k also so if you can have a choice between both go with XP. Looks a heck of alot better too :D :t

Go with XP, it's supported by almost every game made after 2002 and you wont lose performance if your system is good and have at least 512mb of ram. XP sucks up more memory and if you have enough the benchmarks will be close to the same as w2k.

Go with XP, its by far better than Win2k for games.

Go with XP, it's newer, and will last you longer. The game performance in 2000 vs. XP is so small it's negligible. :t

Some games (i.e. NFS High Stakes- EA decided to be lazy and claim that Win2k is for business use) don't work with Win2k so you'll be safer with WinXP.

I don't think that 2k is any good for games. I just switched from windows ME to XP pro and I've got only problems. We got a new video card the GF FX 5200 and the card is not working at all. The game graphics are so messed up so my opinion is that Win ME is really good and I don't plan on switching to XP anytime soon.

Do not switch to me if you plan on it, windows ME is one of the worst OS I have ever used, a total disaster for an OS, you must be doing something wrong for windows XP not to be working on ur games.

2K in my experience it plays much nicer with older games and hardware (contrary to popular opinion on the former) and is basically a 'stripped down' version of XP without all the additional fluffiness to get in the way and slow you down marginally. That said most of the additional junk can be disabled in XP with a bit of know how and to faster machines it doesnt really impact performance. Win2k is also a lot better IMO for competent PC users, who dotn want a wizard jumping up in their face ever tiem they want to open a file etc. XP is far too eager to lend a hand and it personally irritates the hell out of me.

Both 2k and XP are great OS's and brothers in terms of the way they work/are coded anfd as such theres isnt an earth shattering amount to chose between them, for me however, 2k has a few little edges here and there which make me lean towards it, paticularly on older systems

2K is the best OS for games imo, there's little differnce to XP (certainly no difference in driver support or what games it can run), and is slightly nicer to work with at the same time.

I will put in a vote for xp

Win 2000 is not as user friendly as xp. It looks better.

XP all the way.

Far easier to network too if u are into LAN parties.

Ummm I think you must have done something wrong when you switched to XP. NVIDIA works perfectly with XP.

Uh yeah i agree replace the card. Or maybe it is the motherboard.
I know a mx card just did not like my motherboard, but loved my wifes.

ME is horrible with games.....I hate WINME...ugh...

I actually think ME is horrible with anything...but, concerning your previous post, XP is, IMO, too user friendly, too automatic...

Well why do u think 2k is better?
Automatic true but you can still modify things if u are a advanced user.

I like it when I buy new hardware and I can just plug it in and go from there. Rarely do I have to bother with the driver CD unless I have issues with XP drivers.

That's exactly what I dislike in some cases...

I honestly don’t think there is anything wrong with that at all, not every one is advanced as some of us are, XP and 2k are good 2k is good to play a round with as I do, I have it on one of my computers at home, but again I would recommend XP or XP Pro over 2k only because of its user friendly features for them not so advanced users, I hate to use the competent computer user fraise as it insults them who or not so advanced with that particular OS in general. and the hardware adding by its self also happens in 2k and the wizard also, but again if you dont need it you also dont need to have it on. the OS you use can be made as easy or as hard as you like just by simply setting it up for your comfort, windows XP's features can be turned on or of making it easy for some and hard for others.

Oh...I actually think Win2K/WinNT are quite good for begginers as it's easy to prevent them from ruining something

I play on XP and Win2K. I have never had a problem with either. I think you should go with XP if you have a decent system.
