OK, are you ready for this one????

After setting up my system (details follow) I keep receiving this error message when Win 95 tries to boot....

While initializing device IOS:
Windows Protection Fault. You need to restart your computer.

I'm using an Asus P5A MB, an AMD K6-2 400 MHz CPU, 64 MB PC-100 SDRAM, and an Asus V3400 TNT AGP video card. I was able to load Win 95 OSR 2.0 This is when I first recieved the above message. On a normal Win 95 startup, you get that nifty Win 95 logo screen, then it kicks to a DOS screen, then back to the Win 95 screen. On my startup, I get the first Win 95 screen, but when it kicks to the DOS screen, I get the above error message.

I rebooted, and this time it loaded up ok. I then installed USB support. This moved me to OSR 2.1 version 1214. I then rebotted and received the same error message above. It took several reboots to get windows up and running. I then installed my video card driver and a GART driver (thinking that maybe the AGP was causing the problem). No such luck. I keep receiving this error message. Sometimes I can get in, most of the time I can't. Even safe mode doesn't work. And I can't get a Bootlog.txt either. I have never heard of an IOS device. Initial Operating System, Input Output Sytem????? I changed a couple options in my BIOS (one at a time) to try and help this, like turning on PnP support, turning off Boot Virus Protection, etc, but to no avail. Would updating my BIOS help? Win 98? I could try a PCI video card to see if it goes away. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Almost certainly your problem will be resolved by installing a patch you can download from Microsoft.

I cannot remember the name of the patch, ( something like amdk6upd.exe ), but it is to resolve a known problem in the timing with the AMD K6-2 350Mhz, but worked equally well for my 400Mhz CPU.

Hope this helps

Sammy,

thanks for the info. I downloaded the file and will patch my system tonight. This is the exact error message I was getting. I'll let u know if it works.
