here goes;

Have dialup connection ,and home/office network.
Would like to add cable access as well for when travelling and cable modem is available.

WinXpPro
1 56k v92 modem(dialup of course)
2 nics 1 for home/office network 1 to be used for occasional internet access(pcmcia)
Laptop onboard nic port is used for home/office network, which is reason for using pcmcia nic card as the second internet access.

Is there something I am not doing correctly. I should be able to simply connect the cable modem and go. Yet this is not the case,as soon as cat5 is plugged in network icon in taskbar vanishes.

thanx for any assist

Have you tried running the Home Networking Wizard?

certainly,,,without success.

I'm sure it is something silly I'm not doing correctly. Just can't figure out what..

I'm feeling a bit stupid.

What did you select when you ran the wizard?
