I just installed a second hard drive in my computer. I had my 1st hard drive and my CD ROM hooked up on the 1st IDE port. I moved my CD ROM to the 2nd IDE port as a master and put my new hard drive in the 1st IDE port as a slave. The computer recognizes my 2nd hard drive but it doesn't see my CD ROM. What steps do I need to take to get this working? How do I know if my 2nd IDE port is working?

What probably happend is that when you added the new HD it took the drive letter D and now your CD rom is drive E as windows assigns the stuff in priority order the first priority being Hard Drives. you will probably have to install the CD drivers again. It also must be noted that all the stuff that you put in with the D drive is going to have a problem if the CD has to be in the machine when using the program. This is because it will be looking for the files on D which of course is now E.
Hope this helps.

did you remember to enable the 2nd ide port
in your motherboard's bios?

Don't forget to change the jumper on your CD-ROM drive from "Slave" to "Master" You probably thought of that, but sometimes the obvious can slip up on you!

The other posts have good points to check, in addition:
Sometimes in Award BIOS just insuring the "Plug & Play OS = Yes" will solve the problem.
For a sure but frustrating fix, you can reinstall Win95from the CDROM, but first you will have to access the drive from DOS or a boot disk with CDROM support.

Another (very remote possibility-but happened to me once)thing you might check- if your CDROM is loaded by a DOS driver before booting to Windows, does your config.sys file say "LASTDRIVE=D?" ..better at least be "lastdrive=e," or whatever the last drive actually is.
