Can't get my cdrom to work right it is a IDE drive, it is recognized by the bios autodetect fine and shows up in windows fine, but when I try to access it, it returns "Drive not ready." I tried a 98 boot disk and it does the same thing at the command line, I tried a different CDROM and it worked for a day but now it does the same thing... also tried ide master/slave/primary/secondary, and all other permutations.... HELP

First I would say, "Check your CD-ROM Drivers to make sure it is the lated version." That seems to be the basic mistake that many people that I have talked to have not done. Second, I would have to ask you if you have tried to use another IDE controler, maybe on that is located on your sound card (some sound blasters do this) or buy a $40 EIDE controler card (won't hurt cause it is worth the money anyway for the increased speed and performance).

From the sounds of it though, I think it is driver related.

I had a similar problem with an old quad speed 4 disc changer. I'm sorry to say I have never found a solution, unless you count installing it in an old 486 and moving on... Good luck.

Did you just add it or move it? When 2 devices are on 1 IDE channel 1 is a master, 1 is a slave. Jumpers are on the back. Otherwise Win 95 has some program to go out and look for new hardware (not found would be new). It's slow, but it usually works.
