Hey fellow Sysoptians, we could use a little help! We started an ECCp-109 cracking team several weeks ago and are almost to the top http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif We've been at the #5 spot for a while and next week should more into the #3 it not the #2 spot. Our only real competition in this contest is Team Anandtech and the Dutch Power Cows. We pretty much "out produce them on a daily basis, but they are steadily recruiting more help for themselves!
At present, Sysopt has 49 members, about 43 of which are active! Anandtech has 68 with about 65 active, and the Dutch Power Cows have 109 with about 100 or so active!
Put your PC to work for you! You will be helping out Sysopt (you know these people here that help you out with Techie type answers to your questions) and possibly yourself! Yep!! You could be one of the two lucky people that find the winning "Data Point" and win yourself $1000.00! At current prices, you could buy a Tyan duallie mainboard, 2 Palomino 1.2Ghz processors, and alittle RAM to get a good start on the current most powerful "personal" system on Earth!
And the more computers you have running the contest, the better chance you have of winning! Recruit your friends, family, and neighbors (even that idiot down the street) to crack code for you and Team Sysopt!
This contest is fairly new, it just started in April! There is really no work involved by you, download the client, install it, start it running and if you don't have a permanent Internet connection, you click a button once a day (more often if you want) and send the points! The client Does not download anything from the net! It only sends! No chance of picking up any nasty computer bugs with this contest!
Virus, our one-and-only "Proxy Wizard" has developed a team proxy server and has it running (still a few bugs to work out) and it looks great! He and and new member of the Sysopt family "RC" and a fella from Anandtech have done alot of work and modified the client software and "optimized" it for most of the popular processors! There are versions of the client that run on Windows or Linux.
Here are a few links:
The ECCp-109 Challange Home page (Norte Dame University) http://www.nd.edu/~cmonico/eccp109/
The Sysopt Stats Proxy (no, I'm not on top): http://www.statsaholic.com/eccp/index.php?section=ECCP&page=bymember
The secret hide-away for the "Super-enhanced" client software: http://www.statsaholic.com/eccp/clients.php
And like most good Sysoptians, if you need some more information, help, or whatever, shoot me an E-mail and I'll do what I can to help! You can also post to the Distributed Computing Forum where all the knowledgable Geeks hang out http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif
We really need some help and would very much for you to join the team!
Thanks http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I am headed over to distributed computing now. Perhaps a bit in this thread on how to actually join the team and get stats showing up on the stats page.

I just don't get it, why waste cpu cycles on a contest instead of doing something for the betterment of humanity? I choose Genome@home:

But I guess to each his own http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif

Well.... Lets give it a shot.
Does to send through firewalls or what port does it send on?
randy48
09-06-2001, 06:45 PM
Hi LordLocksley, I don't think you'll have any problem sending through a firewall. I used AnalogX proxy without a problem on port 6588. If you need more info, Virus would be the one to ask, he has redone the code and could give you more specific answers.
As far as getting started, joining the team, seeing your stats, etc., it's not hard! All of the links you need are in my first post on the thread.
Download and install the client (from the statsaholic link), the install is real fast! You will need to enter a "handle" (you may want to look at the ECCP home page and click on users to make sure the one you want is available!), your e-mail address, and your real name without a space between first and last! That's it for the install! Next open the ini file and add these two lines:
DP_SERVER_HOST=www.statsaholic.com
DP_SERVER_URL=http://www.statsaholic.com/eccpproxy.pl
This will send your Distingusted Points (sorry, in my first post I called them data points http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif) to the Team proxy. Once you have sent your first point, go to the ECCP home page, click on the link "Join/create a Team" and put in your e-mail address (the same one you used to install the client) and the next block the team name is: Sysopt
The team Stats updates about every 15 minutes (like the RC5 stats), and the contest stats update every 6 hours (Eastern I think) at Midnight, 6AM, Noon, 6PM.
Bsdboy, I'm doing this because them **** scientists create enough problems with the germs and things they make, I'll have no part in helping them!
If you can make a client that will do these things, I will join:
A) Be Optimized for a PIII Coppermine 800EB
B) Use my 512MB PC133 RAM
C) Have a nicer ICON (to match the Win2k Desktop)
D) Make it have a console-based app also (like the DNETC client for Win32)
:-)

You are right, SO why don't you join the Sysopt team for GAH, team# 1312896233. Like you said, why don't you donate wasted cpu cycle to the betterment of humanity. Join Sysopt GAH team. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Welcome to the team http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif the more the merrier. Let's do it for the science for now until more people join the GAH team. I think only few of us are actively engaged.

Cody,
If you go to the distributed forum, you will see that the majority of the current members support what you are requesting.
Unfortunately, we the general members do not have the "power to be". Therefore we can only request that the volunteers have time in their hands to make changes to your demands. Meanwhile the rest of us can only wish/hope that you can add to your total of 10 DP's to the cause. Otherwise, I love this country, USA, you can do almost anything you want. Including go to places people normally do not go. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Cody,
I read an article from Linus Torvald (Linux) saying to the effect that if somebody/newbie made a package in Linux which is tetotally screw up, once the gurus see the package, it would insult their professionalism that they would fix it as soon as possible. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
e
Hrrrrm...
Guess I'll have to fire up SuSE and make a POS so that someone will fix it for me :-)
Actually, I just got done making an icon that uses only colors from the native windows2000 Desktop, so it should match. I am about to inject it into a copy of ECCp and see how it looks!

Keep going Cody http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif That's how things get better http://www.sysopt.com/forum/biggrin.gif And welcome to the team!
BTW, the guys doing the modifications to the clients, etc do have jobs and lives! They do what they can when they have the time. I hate programing! I've refused job offers paying 2 and 3 times what I make now if I would write code, won't do it! Don't like the headaches and the knots on the head from beating it against the wall and the cost of keyboards, monitors, and anything else that is close enough to throw!
Wow... and I have to (almost literally, sometimes) have someone rip me off from my Visual C++ screen sometimes :-)
Where can I get the enhanced code for the PIII ECCp client?
randy48
09-08-2001, 11:06 AM
You can get the code that Virus has been working here (I think):
http://www.statsaholic.com/eccp/clients.php
or shoot him an E-mail and ask him for it! He has an FTP site where they have been transfering the enhanced code, but I'm not sure what it is...maybe "ftp.statsaholic.com?"
BTW: Any idea why I only get 1-2 DP's per 1/2 hour?
With DNETC, I rip about 2-3 work units every 30 seconds to 1 minute.

Engracio thanks for the welcome, Thats the first genome done and working on the next. Just waiting to see the team site update to be sure I got the team right http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif.
Would have joined sooner if I had know about it had a few others running for a while but when your on a team it kind of keeps you running it. This machine sits on its own much of the day tickin over so suppose it now has something to do.

Hey Cody:
The DP's you calculate in ECCP are somewhat different than the "work units" you do in RC5 - you can't directly compare the two. The time it takes to find each distinguished point (DP) varies. I recently checked my log and found that it took as little as 18 seconds to find one point, and over an hour to find another. In the end it does average out though, and a faster machine will consistently find more DP's.

Welcome to the Team Brewmeister :) The team you joined will be making History in the upcoming weeks ;) I have a feeling that we'll be the first team to pass the Dutch Power Cows in a DC contest :D And I also believe it will happen in less then 45 days...mark your calander!

If you are'nt doing this already, at least give it a try. I only run it on a k6-2 300 and I think it's fun. I have watched our team move from #5 to #3 and by the looks of things, as randy48 said, we are going to reach #1! The more people we recruit, the sooner it is gonna happen. Every single DP counts, so even people with a slow computer like me can help. Show your pride for sysopt :D

Come on Sysopt :) Give the ECCp Team just 30 days of your processor(s)! That's all we ask! If after 30 days, you're not interested, there will be no hard feelings! Right now, Sysopt ECCp is the fastest "rising star" in Distributed computing! In less then 2 months we have moved from 97th place to number 3! There are two teams that stand in our way to being the first Sysopt Distributed Computing Team to hold the #1 spot in ANY contest! Team Anandtech and the Dutch Power Cows!
Give us a hand for just 30 days and help Sysopt make HISTORY!
By the way, there is a $1000 prize!

It depends where they were sent. If sent throught the team proxy (http://www.statsaholic.com/eccp/index.php?section=ECCP&page=bymember) every 15 minutes, if sent to the ECCP site (http://www.nd.edu/~cmonico/eccp109/team77.html) every 6 hours GMT -5 hours (US Eastern)...Midnight, 6 AM, Noon, 6 PM.
