Win 2000 Pro more $$$ than Win XP

It's not geared toward the home user so much as the business sector. But that higher price comes with more peace of mind for your PC, IMO.

I have 2000 pro on my systems at the office and xp on a small net at home. Pro has more tools and apps aimed at the business user. It is not as fancy of an interface, all the fancy bells and such as XP, but it is better IMO. Doesn't load up a bunch of stuff I do not need like xp does.

hehe i had xp before, i've seen it do weird stuff ... so i switched back to 2000 Pro. my friends kept on saying they get popups for no apparent reason and blame it on XP. Is it true that XP is somewhat "easier" to get gey popups

XP and 2K both have the messenger service, which is the cause of the 'popup' issue. To get rid, disable the service from administrative tools.

As for pricing reasons, as stated, the 2K family is aimed more at the professional end of the market and so fetches quite a price in its various incarnations.

Windows 2000 Advnaced Server for example will set you back £800 (or sumink daft like that)

M$ want users to move to activation and so I would expect WinXP Pro to be subsidised somewhat.

I will not be using WinXP; I like W2K Pro SP4, as it does not contain graphics fluff or hardware overheads.

indeed, it's also easy to maintain and gives you more control over windows XP home, (although xp pro gives you back that power)

incedentally I thought I had been "letting my system go" after not bothering with maintainance, having my drive about 95% fragmented (I download/discard a lot), only having about a gig left on my drive, not checking for spyware/viruses recently and without clean booting or anything just "randomly" did a benchmark, comparing it to my last benchmark I did nearly 3 months ago my score was nearly identical (in fact 3 3Dmarks higher).

Clearly win2k looks after itself in many respects then :)
