I don't think that degaussing hurts anything, but it might. Many tv's and monitors go a lifetime without even one degaussing, and they do not need it unless it is moved around from room to room, or has been shipped...or maybe had a magnet nearby that magnitized the parts within the tube. So, why do you need to know?...do you degauss every time you turn it on maybe?..

2 reasons why I want to know...

1) I'm just curious

2) I have a lot of stuff around my monitor (other monitors/tv's etc) that create a significant amount of magnetic interference... so i degauss all that time...

I accidentaly hit my button at least once a month. Doh

It dosen't seem to have hurt anything yet.
