I have seen that various stand alone DVD players have the ability to play kodak Photo Cd's. Therefore does this mean that you can write cd's full of Jpegs and then pop them into your DVD player and view a nice little slideshow of all the Jpegs on the CD? - I am sure it is not this simple, but am interested if anybody has any experience with this??

If you get a DVD player that allows CD-R playback, then in a round-about way you can do just that. There is a database of DVD players and their specs and ratings at VCDhelp.com
To get the JPEGs to pay, you have to make an MPEG1 or MPEG2 video out of it. These are the only formats that you can get to play on a set-top DVD player. You can use a variaety of software to do it. TMPGEnc is a freebee that is well documented on VCDHelp. It is not the absolute, most-popular piece of software, but will do the job, for free.
Best of luck
