Ulead is pretty user friendly but maybe take a look at VideoFactory (http://www.sonicfoundry.com/products/NewShowProduct.asp?PID=490)

I would recommend Adobe Premiere 6.0 all the way. It will take a few days to figrue out but it is the best one I have ever used. You can download the 30-trial for free. I did that and decided to buy it.

VirtualDub is not too user friendly, but it is very easy to use. i say not user friendly because the gui is very basic, and its mostly menu-driven. most features are self explanatory, and you can go to sites like http://www.digital-digest.com/nickyguides/ for user-written guides.
