our computer worked fine, just wouldnt go online. anyway,it was a winsock file problem,i guess. does anybody know what an average cost of a reinstall(clean)of win 98 se??i would like to get a few ideas before i post how much i paid, for i think i may have gotten taken advantage of. if you have read any of my previous posts, then you know why i had someone else do it. they also reinstalled all the hardware that we had cd`s for.
thanks to all,brad

actually, dont hunt anymore. got real, real tired of venison years ago, when alcohol had higher priority than food, plus there are too many trolls hunting by sound.as far as the reinstall goes, wife has kinda "grounded" me from messing with it. costs too much money to repair what i attempt to fix

Cost to much to repair what you tried to fix?
You must have really bad luck. 2 years ago I didnt know **** about a computer. I thought a hard drive was the whole pc, case and all.
With the help of this site I have built 2 comps. If you are unsure about how to fix a issue dont just give it a go, come here and ask How do fix it. Thats what I do and I save money by correcting my own problems, not to mention the satisfaction it gives me.
good luck

japperitt,i agree with you completly, but my latest problem i could not get online to this site. still intimidated by these beige boxes a bit. everything seems so delicate, that i m afraid of breaking something or smokin the bios or registry or??

Our local shop charges $60. Per hour for work on a rig. They charge one hour for a reload of OS. If you just want a repair of your system with out a reload. Then they charge buy the hour only till they are done.

Draboo, I understand what you mean. I have had similar problems. The main rule I go by is, If it aint broke dont fix it. I figure why flash bios If I have no problems. Why overclock things if your happy. I got a 1.2 t-bird and I dont think overclocking to 1.3 or even 1.5 would be a major difference. So why take a chance?

What you need is a second cheap or old computer to mess with. Pull it apart, put it together, reinstall the OS a few times, mess it up a few times he he.
Thats how we all learn http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

Cyclone has a good point. Instead of buying a whole pc you could just get another cheap hard drive and practice on it. This Is how I learned. I got a few old hard drives that came out of atms, 1gig and 3 gigs. I practiced on them. 2 good things from this, I learned alot and now I have a extra hard drive ready to pop in if my hard drive ever crashes.
As cyclone mentioned though you could just build a cheap pc.

As for your original question I believe places like Best Buy and CompUSA get about $70 for a Windows install but I don't know what they do about all the drivers for the video, sound, modem, NIC etc. Like the others suggested get an old one and have at it !!! You can pick up an old 486 [$25] or maybe a low level Pentium [$100] and start learning. This way you can still access the web on your wifes machine and you can get all the info you need on the web.
