I was talking with a good mate of mine the other week, and we started chatting about the Resident Evil series. I used to love the Resi's, I had the original on the Playstation, thought it was absolutely fantastic, and although they had their flaws, they were great. Resident Evil 2 in my opinion was one of the greatest sequels ever made. It boasted better graphics, better dynamics, and just general improvements all round, and yet still maintained the horror feel. It was dark, seedy, dingy, and you really did 'feel' like you were part of the nightmare. I also loved the way the insidious Umbrella corporation's secrets became more and more bizarre, but yet still remained twisted enough to fit in with the story.
The thing is... we're now in 2004... and the series is still going. I'd like to say it was still going strong, but I don't think that would be 100% true. Back in the days of the Playstation, they were going strong. However, Code Veronica (the last one I played) on Sega's now dead Dreamcast, was good, not great, and from what I've heard the newer releases have been too flawed and annoying to match their elders.
To me, the story revolving around Umbrella, the mansion lab, and Racoon City became so twisted and warped, it became far too difficult to follow, and when you're playing a survivial horror, the story plays an integral part.
I loved the earlier games, but there are so many reincarnations of the now aging Resident Evil franchise, I don't know whether it still holds the cult following it once did.

Has the Resident Evil series gone too far? Should Capcom have quit while it was ahead?

What do you all think?

:r :r :t

PS - Am I the only one who jumped out of his skin when that thing smashed through the walls at you in Resi 2?

I think Capcom should do what they did with Resident Evil 1 (remade it totaly) an do that to Resident Evil 2 and 3

I couldn't agree more with your post. That game was the first one that seriously stressed me out. The whole game had this eery feeling. I remember the combination of horror movie camera angles and creepy music and overall pace of the game left me wide open a couple of times to have the **** scared out of me. Man, when those wolves crashed through the windows in that hallway...I jumped so high I pulled the controller out of my PS. That happened again to my wife a couple of times later on in the game when you first get attacked by that crazy beast that the camera mimiks from the backyard into the house. Heck you even know its coming and it still scares the **** out of you. Good times.....

That game started the genre IMO.

oh man i love all those old survival horror games. resident evil 1 and two were indeed the best of the series. they just felt so hopeless. man that was good. my personal fav's of the genre were always the silent hill series though. resident evil had more jumps, but in terms of disturbing, silent hill makes r.e. look lik girl scout camp.

ps: and yeah, when the licker jumped through the 1 way glass in r.e. 2, i flipped over backwards and yelped: i was the only one awake with the lights off, it was 1 in the morning and i woke everyone in the house up. never have been scared quite like that.

I think that Capcom should remake the series for PC, all of them. That way people, who don't have consol, will be able to play it too.
I think that Resident Evil are the best horor series ever.:r :D :t

I think they should remake all the Resident Evils except those horrible FPS ones, and make them available for all systems and PC, but just a question the Resident Evil 1 remake, do you guys think the PS2 could do them kinda graphics? better or worse?

Another thing, I think they should resurect Silent Hill1, to the PS2 with better graphics and sound :t

I think what the developers at capcom are doing is fantastic. Bringing back all the older resi's for a newer genearation on the game cube, you know? Have you ever read the books? man there sweet!!
I remember when I was younger I played silent hill 1 and that were pretty friggin scary! played it with the lghts on and I was still scared out of my wits. Yeah they should remake the old silent hill on the PS2. The gore factor was outta this WORLD!!!! and that's pretty cool.....

Silent Hill 1 was the most atmospheric game I've ever played.

I agree that's why I think a remake is at hand, without touching any of the story or atmosphere jus up the graphics an maybe through in Dolby Prologic II or Digital sound :t

That would be cool. I was playing the first ever released demo on the PS1 with some guy. It took you to just before the school level. ( Which I thought was very freaky!)
I remember, we were making our way down that first back alley looking for Cheryl. We keep walkin, the walls are getting dirtier, a random wheel chair is just sat there, the camera is all twisted, and round the corner we see a hospital bed with a corpse under the sheet... and to top it off, you round the corner, the music climaxes, and you see a mutilated corpse pinned to the steel fence in a crucifiction position... and the demo ends. Our first thoughts? "When is this out?!?!"
I liked two, but it didn't have the same creepy feel about it. It had the atmosphere but it didn't create the same feeling of helplessness and forboding as the original PS1 version did. I hear a 3 is in the making. I don't think they beat the Resi's in terms of cool zombie bashing survival horror, but they certainly do have more of a chill factor. Silent Hill was always more psychological horror anyway.

I'll second that
Silent Hill 3 is creapier and better looking than the second but not as creepy as the first, but it was a step in the right direction :t
