Anyone know where I can download a free MPEG 2 Codec. I want to encode home movies into MPEG 2 format.

For some reason, I believe that the mpeg2 encoding procedure is copyrighted. You will have to pay some money to do it. If you are looking for programs that do this anyway, I think that is in voilation of the terms and conditions of this BBS.

By asking for something to download for free, I was not asking for pirated software, I was asking for Freeware or even Shareware.

Why not encode to a MPEG-4 codec for improved compression? Using the Divx codec with VirtualDub (both free) should work perfectly fine assuming you are just using a PC for playback purposes anyway.

Hope this helps,

MPEG2 is playble on DVD players and this is the reason people are looking for codecs to make MiniDVD's and SVCDs

Unfortunatelly the MPEG2 Codec is not free. If you want to make DVD compatible VOB files you will need to buy an expensive codec from Panasonic (gives the best quality). For SVCD you can use TMPGenc to encode from other formats to (X)(S)VCD right ahead.

Look here (http://www.vcdhelp.com) for more help.

I found a program that will convert a AVI to MPEG2 that works real well called TMPGEnc at http://www.tmpgenc.com/e_main.html.

I just donloaded the codecs for Divx and was asked during the install if I wanted to supply support for MPEG 2. Of course I said yes. I downloaded it from here
www.divx.com/download (http://www.divx.com/download)

Just installing the codecs allows me to use Windows Media Player as my viewer.
