Hey all. Got a question here. I inserted my Win98 CD to check for some vxd files. Now all of the .CAB folders are showing as zipped. Is the file association messed up or something? Has this happened to anyone else. I really need to get into them. They used to show as folders, but not anymore.
Thanks

I'll assume you have installed Winzip 7. It has associated Cab files with itself when installed. It does not make any difference though I have never seen Cab files as folders.
You can extract files from the cab files with Winzip....no probs. In fact it is now easier than it has ever been.

You're right, Krusty. I could have sworn that I've viewed them as folders before. When I had to extract some .vxd's, I just clicked on the cab file, and it listed all the files in it. Oh, well. Thanks for the help. Winzip works just fine.

You wouldnt have happened to have installed Zip Magic would you? That would make the .cab files into folders. Infact it does so with .zip, .rar, .arj etc.
Hehehe
That's funny. I thought I was going mad too.
I also noticed that what I used to call .csv (Win3.1 comma-delimited data files) and used for mail-merging, importing to databases etc. are reassigned in Win98/NT4 as some kind of Excel sub-format. Sigh.

Microsoft Plus 98 also makes cabs and zip files into folders.

Nathan has a fix for you if you still want to view as cab extentions instead if zip.

Thanks JMatrix! I was going to settle with WinZip, but that was a huge help. It's amazing, how much can be done with regedit!!!

<EDIT>
I guess I should post the fix here if anyone else doesn't like WinZip changing the association of .cab files. Type regedit at the run dialog box, and find the reg key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.cab
Right click on the entry in the right side window, and choose modify (i think that's the option) and then type "CLSID\{0CD7A5C0-9F37-11CE-AE65-08002B2E1262}" Without the quotations, and those are zeros not "O's".
