...that is the question.
For a few weekends now, I've been using one of my old machines to run a Half-Life Dedicated Server for HL and its mods. I use the non-Steam DSs, but I was curious as to who here uses Valve's super-whamadyme, uber-hyped, automatic patching system called Steam. So the choices are as above.

Cant stand the thing, and couldnt imagine living with it on my old 128k connection, nevermind dialup.
It really did get on my nerves immensley, and only lasted about a week before i uninstalled it

I used Steam to play CS 1.6 but I only played local servers so I don't experience lag or delay when it is loading.
At the same time, I am having a lot of problems in deleting some servers from Favorites and History tabs permanently. Can someone help me on this problem?
Wherever I returned to Steam, all the deleted servers will come back to Favorites and History. I'm completely stunned by this!

I wasn't keen on steam at all. Didn't like it's interface, it was buggy, looked ugly, and just basically didn't impress me. It was one of the reasons which added to my complete stoppage of all online gaming. I just completely lost interest.

That's really really sad man :(
ps.. STEAM is a POS IMO
:t
How come Steam is quite popular in Singapore and the people here don't complain about the delay or lag? Strange! Is it because Steam is located in Asia?

my problem wasn't with the lag, but the actual application.. too big, too power hungry and plain crappy.. And I didn't really like the modifications of CS 1.6, so I had no interest in it!

I plyed the first few releases of that with Optimus Prime for a while, good fun but the control system is perhaps a little too complex for what it does in comparison to say Action HL

Steam is rubbish.
I used to play DoD often. Now....
Well never actualy. I cant connect to the 'Steam Network'
I was connecting with Steam when I first installed it and played at least 2 Hours of DoD.
But since then (2 weeks now) I have not been able to connect.
What a load of rubbish this software is.
Bin it I say and dump Valve and their cronies.

They way Valve is updating steam like made i would say yes. I dont think they would have made this new client if they wernt going to use it with HL2

Steam isn't all that bad. You do know that you can get skins for it, right? I see no difference when playing online games with it. My biggest thing is when they update it, you can't play anything for a good long time. I like not having to open up the actual game, then find a server through the WON system-which I ALWAYS had problems with the filters rarely applying and having to wait 30 minutes for every server ever made to load up. Then you would have to back to the main menu, change the custom game...blah blah blah. All in all, it's pretty good.

dark sonic, you realise a) you could get external browers and b) if you were playing HLDM and tried to connect to a CS server it will change the mod in game without ever having to touch the custom game menu right?
and as for point B), steam can't do taht anymore, if you join a game in steam you can't switch mods without quitting out your game.

I know about external software. I used Gamespy for a long time, but it is very bloated. I don't know about now, but when I used it, it was huge.

More than anything, I think us gamers (well the bad ones) brought it on ourselves. Steam, in theory, will prevent both hacking and piracy, or at least dramatically reduce it. And even if it doesn't totally work, it's going to work more effective than current measures (not to mention saving Valve thousands of dollars on pirated copies). :t

I use the 250kb "serverinfo" tool, no bloat, does HL and Q3 (and some other stuff too I think now)

So you are all happy that you've had 3 unfulfilled release dates? As long as Doom 3 ships before summer, I'm cool (which will still be before HL2). :t

Valve has officially said their release date 3 times, but id hasn't said one word about there's. So in a sense no, a release date isn't a release date (unless your Valve, which picks release dates weekly out of a hat). ;)
IF Doom 3 and Half-Life 2 come out together on the same date, what will happen in the end?
Will there be chaos when the two games come out together?
