CD Rom always flashing

I just installed an old Sony 8x cdrom for playing music. I works fine but is constantly blinking on and off every few seconds at random intervals when there is no disk in it. It is not a problem, but I was just curious as I have used scores of different cdroms and never noticed that happen before. Any comments?

I think that this happens when the cd player does a search for a CD, A lot of the older drives did this like every 5 or six seconds.

I have one at my place that did that all the time too.. I disabled auto insert notification and it went away... That is under the control panel>>system>>> devices>> CD-rom>> properties

I recently "refurbished" an i486 for someone and it did this too. Most CD-ROMs today let the system know there is a CD in by checking when the drive is "injected" (I.E. un-ejected), but some older ones just constantly check.
