Well I am looking at getting a new barebone system to replace my current athlon 550. I am not sure if I want to go with a P4 1700mhz, or a Athlon 1400ghz.

Which would be the better choice, and what would the best motherboard be for the respected processor.

Thanks!!

Go with the Athlon. An Athlon 1.4ghz is as fast (or faster) than a P4 1.7ghz.

Also, Intel is changing the socket design for the next generation of P4's, so upgrading will require getting a new motherboard, while AMD is going to use the same Socket A configuration, making upgrades in speed much easier.

Besides, check this out (http://tech-report.com/reviews/2001q1/p4-vs-athlon/) ! The 1.1Ghz T-bird on PC133 RAM actually beat the 1.5Ghz P4 on RDRAM in many of the "real world" benchmarks.

Cool deal, what mobo would you suggest for the T-Bird, and what case, or better yet if you know a good barebones one that would rock!

I read that VIA has released an updated chipset (KT266A), is this available on Motherboards yet?

Buy cheap, It will be worth even less tomorrow. AMD rocks for the moment. Look for a deal that supports the most legacy hand me downs and you can build a respectable machine for pennys on the dollar in todays market.

Ya I plan on reusing my hard drives and video card and cd burner so really all I need is a bare bone pc. Any suggestions for mobo?

Me say "MSI!".

Got the Pro 2A and it hasn't failed me yet!

Cheap motherboard - go Epox. Seen the 8KHA (DDR) for about $103 on newegg.com. Even comes with onboard sound if you aren't picky. Simple enough to disable if you have a favorite sound card. The KT266A apparently benchmarks better on memory bandwith. Is it worth the wait? Who knows since we don't know yet what the wait will be. I wouldn't sweat the difference if I was upgrading from a SlotA 550! It will still rock.
